Ex-Man City star Nicolas Otamendi assaulted and tied up as burglars raid home

Former Manchester City defender Nicolas Otamendi was reportedly assaulted and robbed at his home in Portugal on Monday morning.

Otamendi, 33, now stars for Benfica and was the victim of the violent attack after a match against Famalicao, according to Correio de Manha.

Four attackers are alleged to have broke into the player's house and assaulted Otamendi, who is said to have had a belt placed around his neck.

The report adds how the intruders then made off with a haul of loot, including money and watches.

It is claimed Otamendi was beaten before having the belt put around his neck and taken to the room where his 'panicked' wife and son were.

The player is said to have been 'caught as he arrived back at his home' after Benfica's match against Famalicao, which ended in a 4-1 win for the away side.

Otamendi’s club Benfica have released a statement in response to the horrific attack.

The Portuguese club’s statement read: "Benfica confirms that its player Nico Otamendi was the victim of a robbery at his home during the early hours of today.

"The player and his family are doing well, despite the enormous discomfort generated by the situation they are experiencing.

"Benfica asks that the privacy of the player and his family be respected by all the media, pending the completion of the investigations initiated by the authorities."

Otamendi joined Manchester City in 2015 and made over 200 appearances for the Premier League giants, winning nine major trophies including two Premier League titles.

He moved to Benfica in the summer of 2020 for a fee of around £12million and has so far featured 50 times for the Portuguese club.

The former Velez Sarsfield man has also won 87 caps at international level for Argentina and was a member of the squad that lifted the Copa America in the summer.
