Footballers are quite rightly greeted with an avalanche of 'tuts' when they dive on the pitch, yet guests at a Dubai pool bar would have preferred then-Portsmouth ace Jermaine Pennant to dive into the pool.
That is because the ex-Liverpool and Arsenal midfielder tormented the guests and “drenched” a barman by "bombing" into a sophisticated pool bar in Dubai. Peter Crouch offered a sublime insight into the chaos Pennant caused at the watering hole of Instagrammers, influencers and those among us who regard themselves with high-esteem.
Pool bars are supposed to be places where you can enjoy a nice glass of Champagne or a cocktail while also having a small dip in the pool. Unfortunately, their cocktails were immediately watered down by chlorine filled, luke-warm pool water, as a ‘Tidal Wave’ descended upon what should have been a relaxed setting.
“We had a kit-man called squirrel and he ran and jumped in this bush a couple of times, and that was hilarious,” Crouch said through laughter on ‘That Peter Crouch Podcast. “But then Pennant thought it would be funny to jump in the pool.
“He bombed, the pool bar, where most people sit and have a nice drink, he bombed the pool bar. Everyone went mad obviously, as you would expect, ‘footballers are a disgrace, he’s bombing the pool bar, we’re here with our families, awful’.”
Had Pennant been a child overseen by his parents instead of a Premier League footballer accompanied by his laughing teammates, he likely would have been dragged from the pool by his ear. Unfortunately, his Pompey team mates attempt of disciplining the wind-up merchant fell on very deaf, and then, wet ears.

“Anyway we came back and we said, ‘that was very funny Pen, but don’t do that again’. I’ve turned round, he’s doing 50 yards I think, double bombed, he’s gone again and put a Tidal Wave over the whole thing.
“The barman had a shirt on, he’s drenched, the alpha male of the bar has gone beserk and gone ‘you are a disgrace’ and got the manager over. The more sensible people have gone over and said, ‘we’re so sorry he won’t do this again,’ – 15 minutes later, he’s gone about 100 yards this time.
“He has gone full hammer this time on to the pool bar again. I don’t think Pen was proud of it, but again, very funny.”
