Newcastle’s recent takeover has linked them with Premier League stars such as Jesse Lingard, Declan Rice and Dominic Calvert-Lewin in recent weeks as their new owners look to catapult the Magpies into European reckoning as soon as possible. However, there may be a player on the cards who has already shown his excellence in the Premier League in Fenerbache’s ex-Arsenal star Mesut Ozil.
Ozil, 33, spent seven fruitful years at Arsenal following a £42million move from Real Madrid in 2013.
Winning three FA Cup medals in his time at the Emirates, Ozil became one of Arsenal’s poster boys under Arsene Wenger in a side that featured superstars such as Aaron Ramsey, Alexis Sanchez and current boss Mikel Arteta.
Yet following the departure of Wenger, Ozil made just 42 league appearances in two-and-a-half-years under the guidance of Unai Emery and Mikel Arteta before being shipped out to Fenerbahce in January 2021.
With the World Cup winner clearly being one of the Istanbul-based outfit’s best players, there may be a reluctancy to see him return to England.
However, after being linked by FourFourTwo, Ozil will see the chance to play in one of Europe’s best leagues alongside a huge wage to boot, which may be too hard to turn down.
Newcastle were taken over two weeks ago by Saudi owners in a bid to make them a globally recognised force.
The club have languished in mid-table and even the Championship in years gone by, enough for fans to take a stand.
Their nightmare 14 years under the ownership of Mike Ashley came to an end following the switch of hands.
And the club will look to sign stars in the ilk of Ozil to propel them up the table.

And he looked back somewhat negatively on his time, claiming that Magpies’ fans wanted him out from the start.
“To never really be wanted, to feel that people wanted me to fail & saying I would fail, that I was useless, a fat waste of space, a tactically inept cabbage head,” he said.
“I’ve always enjoyed the fight, proving people wrong, but that’s all it ever seemed to be. A fight, a battle. It does take its toll because even when you win a game, you don’t feel like you are winning over the supporters.”
