Manchester United fans have had their hopes of securing Champions League football restored by club hero Patrice Evra after his refusal to detail his thought on the appointment of Erik ten Hag.

In a video posted on Twitter captioned ‘This is what I think about Ten Hag’, the Frenchman stressed the importance of fans thinking about the present rather than what the Dutchman could bring to Old Trafford. He said: “Dear United fans, people keep asking me the question ‘what do you think about Ten Hag?’” My answer is really simple, Ten Hag is not the present, he’s the really near future.

“That’s why I want you to focus on the present even if the present doesn’t look that good, but we have still got four games left. I know most of you don’t believe in our team, but me, I believe in our team, I believe in this badge, I believe that history never dies and everything can happen in football. So the players, I want you to prove to me that I am not the only crazy person to believe in you guys because we can do it, it’s a lot of negativity around the club, it’s not easy for you but you have nothing to lose now.”

The former left-back went on to say that players should speak to Ralf Rangnick and say "I don’t want to play, my season is over" if they don’t believe that the Red Devils can finish in the top four this season. And despite United being in sixth and six points out of the top four – with Arsenal and Tottenham above them and with a game in hand each – some fans were inspired by Evra.

One fan replied: “Good talk legend, I believe too.” Whilst another added: “Your positivity is amazing, Evra.”

“If we had half a team with your passion, positivity and pride at wearing that shirt we would be in the top four. Get the boots out Evra, you could probably still get a game in this squad,” said another.

But not all fans were able to get on board with the club legend’s inspiring words, with the feeling that his belief was wasted. One replied to the tweet saying: “I love your positivity uncle Pat but this season is over for us, no hope in CL spot. Even Rangnick already talked about the future of some players, how does that help the players to still focus on the present?”

Another added: “I love you Pat but you crazy men, we can't make it. Let's start building now by giving the academy players chance. I will actually be happy if we can finish outside Europa League.”

It remains to be seen whether Evra’s call for belief rubs off on the players and can spark a reaction. The Red Devils take on Chelsea on Thursday night.
