Everton's Cenk Tosun edges closer to Besiktas return

Everton’s Cenk Tosun edges closer to Besiktas return after Carlo Ancelotti named just eight subs in Newcastle defeat with striker, Bernard and Jonas Lossl working on January exits

  • Cenk Tosun is poised to re-join Besiktas who he left for Everton in January 2018
  • Striker was left out against Newcastle as Carlo Ancelotti named only eight subs
  • Winger Bernard and goal-keeper Jonas Lossl also on their way out of Everton

Everton striker Cenk Tosun is closing on a return to Besiktas after further talks on Saturday.

Everton named only eight substitutes for Saturday’s defeat to Newcastle United instead of their allotted nine as Tosun, Bernard and goalkeeper Jonas Lossl discussed their departures from the club.

Tosun joined Everton in 2018 from Besiktas for a sizeable £27million, but has failed to make himself a first-team regular under successive managers. He has scored a meagre nine goals in 49 Premier League games for the Toffees.

The 29-year-old missed the end of last season and the start of this campaign recovering from cruciate ligament surgery.

Tosun has made just five league appearances under Carlo Ancelotti so far this season, all from the substitute’s bench, and started in the FA Cup third round tie against Rotherham United.

The striker has been linked with several clubs, including Besiktas’ Turkish rivals Fenerbahce. Celta Vigo and CSKA Moscow had also shown interest in Tosun but he wants to return to Turkey if Besiktas agree on a bonus plus his salary.

Brazilian winger Bernard is in the throes of finalising his move to Al Nasr in Dubai while goalkeeper Jonas Lossl is re-joining FC Midtjylland.

Bernard also appears to have fallen out of favour under Ancelotti, making just six league appearances this season and not featuring at all since New Year’s Day.

Lossl, 31, leaves having not won a single senior cap for the Toffees, to return to the club where he came up through the ranks.

Full-back Jonjoe Kenny remains a target for Burnley though the clubs have still to agree a fee, while Anthony Gordon is wanted on loan by Preston North End, Bournemouth and Blackburn.
