Everton submit Beto bid as Southampton play hardball over Che Adams transfer

Everton have reignited their interest in Udinese target man Beto after failing to entice Southampton into the sale of Che Adams. Although a deal for the 27-year-old Scotland international is still very much alive, the Saints are yet to accept Everton’s improved £15million offer and negotiations have stalled.

The Toffees failed with an initial £12m bid for Adams last weekend and earlier this week there was confidence their second offer would be enough to reach an agreement.

But talks have failed to bear fruit and director of football Kevin Thelwell has turned attention back to Beto, who was the subject of a failed deadline day bid worth in the region of £22m back in January.

Now Everton have made a fresh proposal worth up to £22.5m including add-ons as Southampton continue to dig their heels into the ground over Adams.

Beto struck 10 times in Serie A last season for Udinese and has also attracted interest from Napoli and Inter Milan this summer.

When quizzed on why Everton were yet to get a deal for Adams over the line, Sean Dyche said: “They don’t come cheap, you have to find ways of constructing deals.”

Udinese are unlikely to accept Everton’s offer for Beto and will instead point the Toffees towards his £30m release clause.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s wretched luck with injuries continue on Sunday after he sustained a fractured cheekbone in the 4-0 defeat at Aston Villa.

The England international is now set for a spell on the sidelines which has once again highlighted the importance of landing attacking reinforcements for Dyche.

Neal Maupay has managed just one goal in 31 appearances for Everton and he is available for transfer should a suitable offer arrive.

It is not currently known whether the Toffees can afford to fund deals for both Beto and Adams although it’s more than likely a case of one or the other – unless they can recoup a credible fee for Maupay.

Southampton remain optimistic that Adams could yet stay at St Mary’s and potentially sign a contract extension having scored in all of their opening three Championship matches.

His current deal is due to expire in the summer of 2024 but Russell Martin has made it clear the club would be prepared to offer him fresh terms on the South Coast.
