Everton owner Farhad Moshiri backs Toffees boss Frank Lampard

‘I have faith in the work being done’: Everton owner Farhad Moshiri backs Toffees boss Frank Lampard despite letter from fans pleading for changes at the club ahead of sit-in protest against the board

Farhad Moshiri has pledged his support to Frank Lampard and expressed faith that his embattled manager will turn things around.

Everton’s major shareholder has been under pressure from fans’ groups to speak about the situation in which the club finds itself; the mood amongst supporters is febrile and there are plans to protest against the board after Saturday’s crucial fixture against Southampton.

There have been nine defeats in the last 12 matches in all competitions but there is little appetite in the stands for Lampard to lose his job; there is a widespread belief that the man in the dugout is the least of Everton’s problems.

The Everton owner has gone against the fans pleas of making changes for the good of the club

Moshiri received an open letter from Everton’s Fans Forum earlier this week, in which they expressed their concerns about the direction of the club, and the Iranian responded in an open letter of his own, published on their official website last night.

‘As the majority shareholder and proud custodian of Everton, I have the utmost respect for the support of Evertonians,’ Moshiri wrote. ‘I am also fully aware and understand the concerns that fans may have.

‘I have faith in the work being done not only by our manager, but our Director of Football (Kevin Thelwell) and our board of directors.

Everton fans are planning a sit-down protest after the game with Southampton on Saturday

That faith is based on my knowledge of the depth and quality of work being done both at Finch Farm and the Royal Liver Building – and of the plan that is in place. I am confident that we have skilled, experienced and focused professionals at all levels of the Club.’

Lampard has taken questions about his situation in his stride and insisted ahead of the FA Cup tie that he did not need a public vote of confidence; it must also remembered that Moshiri gave his public backing to Rafa Benitez a year ago but sacked him after a defeat at Norwich.

But Moshiri, who raised his controlling stake in Everton to 94 per cent last January, indicated that he does not have the appetite for much change, having sacked five managers and two Directors of Football since February 2016

‘We are all agreed that our current league position must and will improve,’ Moshiri said.

‘In almost seven years since my arrival at the Club, I have significantly increased my investment and our new stadium has become reality. We regularly review our performance and initiate change where we feel that the Club falls short of standard.

‘This has meant we have seen turnover in managers, Directors of Football and several board members, but always as we have striven to achieve success. Whilst, in virtually every instance, change has been supported and encouraged by fans, stability must be the key to progression.’
