Everton chiefs could decide tonight who they want to be the club’s next manager, according to reports. The Everton board are holding a meeting this evening [Friday] and three candidates are in line for the role. The Toffees have been on the search for a new manager since sacking Rafa Benitez earlier this month.

Duncan Ferguson is currently in interim charge of Everton and oversaw their 1-0 loss to Aston Villa last weekend.

Ferguson is one of three candidates said to be under consideration.

The others are former Porto boss Vitor Pereira and Chelsea legend Frank Lampard.

Sky Sports News presenter Bela Shah reported the breaking news on Friday afternoon.

Shah said: “Everton are expected to hold a board meeting this evening following today’s interviews regarding the vacant manager position.

“Now, Vitor Pereira, Frank Lampard and Duncan Ferguson all holding further talks. It’s thought a decision may be made tonight.

“So that board meeting is being held this evening.”

Reports that Pereira was a target for Everton was met by an angry response from some of the club’s supporters.

One fan sprayed ‘Pereira out, Lampard in’ on a wall outside the club’s home ground.

Lampard has not managed since being sacked by Chelsea last January.

Pereira was last in charge of Turkish giants Fenerbahce but was just sacked after just six months in charge.

Former Everton and England striker Wayne Rooney has been linked with the vacancy at Goodison Park.

But he revealed on Friday that he turned down an approach from the Toffees and wants to stay at Derby County.

Speaking at his press conference, Rooney said: “Everton approached my agent and asked me to interview for the vacant job, which I turned down.

“I believe that I will be a Premier League manager and I believe I’m ready for that 100 per cent, and if that is with Everton one day in the future that’d be absolutely great.

“But I’ve got a job here to do at Derby County which is an important job to me.

“Yes, of course I did [think hard about it]. They got in touch with my agent and my agent let the administrators know as well. Of course it was a very difficult decision for me.”
