Everton fans have finally got their wish after the announcement of Rafa Benitez's departure had surfaced.
On Sunday, a day after the Toffees lost their Premier League encounter with struggling Norwich, news filtered through that the Spaniard had been relieved of his duties at Goodison Park.
Everton had won just one game in their last 13 and first-team players, such as the recently-departed Lucas Digne, had a fractious relationship with the former Newcastle boss.
Benitez's appointment was the most controversial in the club’s history and it was short-lived.
A statement from the club read: “Everton Football Club can confirm the departure of Rafael Benitez as First Team manager.
“Benitez, who joined Everton in June 2021, has left the Club with immediate effect.
“An update on a permanent replacement will be made in due course.”
News has delighted a large majority of Everton supporters, who took to social media to express their elation.
One of the buzzwords used was ‘Sam Paelladyce’ – a reference to Sam Allardyce, a former Everton manager known for his conservative approach, and the Spanish food paella.
One said: “Good riddance Paelladyce. “The damage that Paelladyce has done to that club in such a short space of time is nothing short of spectacular.”
Another said: “The right decision to sack Rafa Benitez… He should never of been appointed in the first place. Now give the Evertonians a manager they really want and who understands the club…. This squad should not be where they are.”
A third said: “I thought I’d be over the moon he’s gone but im blazing. 7 months of unnecessary stress etc which was only ever going to end one way! To compound it the washed-up slob rides off into the sunset his saddlebags stuffed with our money!”
A fourth stated: “I’d love to see a video of him walking home after getting the boot, as we all know he’ll know the best shortcuts coz he knows the city.”

Already reports have emerged over who will take over at Everton. Duncan Ferguson, who took temporary charge following Marco Silva’s dismissal, is one. As is former manager Roberto Martínez despite being sacked by Farhad Moshiri in 2016. Others include former Franada coach Diego Martínez, José Mourinho, Niko Kovac and Wayne Rooney.
Benitez lasted just six months of his three-year contract and is only the second man to have managed both Everton and Liverpool, with Willian Edward Barclay doing so in the 19th century.
The 61-year-old received a warm ovation before his first home game at the helm but things started to fall apart thereafter.
