‘What a man!’: Everton fans hail caretaker boss Duncan Ferguson for putting money behind the bar at local pub ahead of his first game back on the touchline against Aston Villa

Duncan Ferguson has already got fans on his side before Everton have even kicked a ball after he put money behind the bar of a pub close to Goodison Park. 

The Winslow Hotel is opposite the stadium and posted on Twitter on Saturday morning that Ferguson had made the gesture.

‘Massive big thanks to the legend that is Duncan Ferguson for buying all our customers their first drink this morning,’ the pub said.

The pub, which is across the road from Goodison Park, called it an ‘amazing generous gesture’

‘Amazing generous gesture, that’s a measure of the man. COYB.’ 

Everton fans also took to Twitter to praise the club legend who is returning to the touchline following Rafa Benitez’s sacking last weekend.

His first game is against Aston Villa in the Saturday lunchtime kickoff and the Goodison faithful will be in fine voice following the gesture. 

One fan said ‘What a man! Looking forward to the match for the first time in a long time.’

Another called it a ‘good touch’ and one said it was an ‘Absolutely class gesture.’

Speaking on BT Sport, former Everton player Joleon Lescott said it was a ‘very smart’ move.

‘I think that is the kind of way the owner should look at appointing the next manager, I think they need to build relationships especially with the fans, just getting someone they want to see in charge.

‘I think that is key to the decision making, building that relationship, because I think they’ve grown apart in the last four or five seasons.’

It is the second time Ferguson has stepped into the top job after he was named caretaker following the sacking of Marco Silva in 2019.

Carlo Ancelotti became the permanent manager afterwards but kept Ferguson on as part of his coaching staff. 

Ferguson revealed on Friday that he received a call from his old boss who encouraged him to seize the moment.

‘Carlo said to me: “Be yourself. You’re ready,”‘ Ferguson said.

‘That gave me a bit of confidence. I worked with Carlo for a couple of seasons and he told me to go for it, to be myself.

‘He said you know what you’re doing and you’ve got the experience on the training ground. He said: “You’re ready.” That gave me a bit of a boost to be honest with you, hearing it from a guy like that who has done it all. That was good.’
