Europa League fan who stormed pitch and swung at keeper lands 40-year ban

A pitch-invading PSV supporter who tried to attack a Sevilla player during a recent Europa League match has been handed a 40-year stadium ban.

The fan, who leaped onto the field during PSV's 2-0 win over the La Liga club last month, ran over to Sevilla goalkeeper Marko Dmitrovic and threw a punch at him.

Dramatic footage showed Dmitrovic trying to dodge the punch before wrestling the 20-year-old to the ground and pinning him to the floor before stewards intervened and removed him from the field.

The culrpit, who was also handed a three-month prison sentence, was supposed to be serving a national stadium ban and should not have been let into the ground.

It's understood he entered using a ticket bought by a friend.

In a statement, PSV said the pitch-invading supporter is not only banned from their stadium for four decades but is also forbidden from entering the area around the ground for two years, adding that the club "strongly condemned the incident."

Sevilla lost the game 2-0 but won the tie 3-2 on aggregate to advance to the round of 16. They then defeated Fenerbahce over two legs to book their place in the quarter-finals where they will face Manchester United.

The Spanish club have won the Europa League six times, more than any other team, though United have a fairly good record in the competition in recent years too, having lifted the trophy in 2017 and reached the final in 2021.

In 2019, they were knocked out at the semi-final stage by Sevilla, meaning that a little revenge may well be on the cards.
