Greenwood has been suspended by United since he was charged with attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour and assault occasioning actual bodily harm in October last year.
Those charges were withdrawn in February but he is still suspended while United carry out their investigation over whether the 21-year-old brought the club into disrepute and therefore breached his contract.
Greenwood was named on United’s retained list last month as he is still under contract, although the club state that the investigation is not impacted by that.
He has not played for Manchester United since 22 January 2022 when he started in a 1-0 win over West Ham in the Premier League.
Greenwood could be loaned out for the 2023-24 season as Ten Hag is believed to be reluctant to offload the striker on a permanent basis.
Ten Hag has now spoken openly about the player ahead of Saturday’s pre-season friendly with Arsenal and said: ‘It’s a club decision and of course, I shared my opinions but it’s a club decision and we all have to accept that.’
Pushed if he wanted Greenwood to return to the United squad, Ten Hag added: ‘I can’t say so much about it but I shared my opinion about it, so let’s see what’s going to happen.’
Greenwood may be sent on loan to Serie A side Atalanta as part of a deal to bring Rasmus Hojlund to United, according to reports.
Meanwhile, Jose Mourinho has reportedly reached out to Greenwood to offer him a lifeline at Roma next season.
