Erik ten Hag ‘blocks Tom Heaton exit’ despite star asking to leave Man Utd

Man Utd fans protest outside Old Trafford

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has blocked Tom Heaton’s move to Luton Town as doubts loom over David de Gea’s future, according to reports. Ten Hag is said to have rejected Heaton’s transfer request after United’s contract talks with De Gea hit a dead end.

According to the Telegraph, the 37-year-old asked Ten Hag to let him leave after triggering a one-year extension in his contract due to his desire to be a Premier League No 1.

But the Dutchman faces the prospect of needing Heaton as his first-choice goalkeeper next season, with De Gea and Dean Henderson not expected to stick around.

The report claims United withdrew their contract offer to De Gea, meaning he is primed to leave the club as a free agent at midnight on Friday.

Meanwhile, Henderson has already returned to Carrington to continue injury rebab but looks set to join Nottingham Forest permanently after spending last season on loan at the City Ground.

Ten Hag’s decision to squad Heaton’s hopes of a switch to Luton suggests he is planning for De Gea and Henderson both to depart.
