England’s Gareth Southgate sent brilliant text to David Seaman after Germany win

David Seaman has revealed England manager Gareth Southgate sent him a brilliant text after beating Germany in the Euros.

The legendary Arsenal goalkeeper represented England alongside Southgate at Euro ’96 where they suffered heartbeak together on home soil after Southgate’s missed penalty in the shootout saw them lose to Germany.

Southgate more than made up for it on Tuesday by gifting England fans with a magical 2-0 victory 25 years later at Wembley Stadium to take them to the quarter-finals of the competition against their bitter rivals.

Now Seaman has revealed the two shared messages after Southgate admitted following the final whistle that he felt he had let down his teammates all those years ago.

Speaking to William Hill, Seaman said: “I text him straight after the game and he was brilliant about it. He said to me “yeah, it’s been a long time coming!”

“When Gareth said that he’d seen me on the big screen and he realised myself and the rest of the lads hadn’t got to the (Euro ’96) final because he missed the penalty, it meant so much, but it never crossed my mind that that was the whole reason.

“Gazza (Paul Gascoigne) also missed a chance by an inch, Darren Anderton hit the post, and I should have saved a penalty. All of those things you bring together collectively as a team.

“Gareth didn’t hit the best penalty of his life, but for him to go full circle now and to see him walking around, clapping the fans, fist pumping and looking to the skies made me so happy for him.”

England have a genuine shot at making history in their quarter-final leg against Ukraine which will be played in Rome.

The last time The Three Lions made it to the semi-final of a major competition was in 1990, led by Gary Lineker and Paul Gascoigne.

With Southgate at the helm, a golden generation of youngsters and the nation behind them, England will be favourites for the semi-final match at Wembley should they get there.
