England will be looking to reach the World Cup semi-finals for the second time in four years by dumping France out with a historic victory at the Al Bayt Stadium this evening. Gareth Southgate’s men will go into the match as the slight underdogs to reach the last four in Qatar but will have every chance of beating the defending champions if they perform to the best of their abilities over the course of the contest.

England breezed into the quarter-finals with a comfortable victory over Senegal last week but will face an entirely different test against France, who are hoping to become the first side to win back-to-back World Cups since Brazil in 1958 and 1962. The likes of Kylian Mbappe and Olivier Giroud will be tasked with breaking down England’s defensive ranks and will fancy their chances of doing so, with the pair having scored eight goals between them since the beginning of the tournament.

However, it remains to be seen whether England will be able to send France packing by claiming the spoils in Al Khor, with Southgate expected to name an unchanged side against Les Bleus this evening. It should see Harry Kane flanked by Phil Foden and Bukayo Saka at the top of the pitch, while a four-man defence is set to be deployed instead of a back three as England look to contain the world-class attacking threat posed by France.
