England will hope to finish top of World Cup Group B with a win over rivals Wales on Tuesday. Gareth Southgate is being urged to unleash Phil Foden ahead of the Home Nations clash at the Ahmed bin Ali Stadium. Express Sport looks at the likely Three Lions team.

Goalkeeper: Jordan Pickford

Southgate is expected to name a largely familiar line-up, which will mean Jordan Pickford starting in goal. The Everton shot-stopper was largely unchallenged against the USA but could come under pressure against a Wales side looking to repair personal pride.

Defenders: Kieran Trippier, John Stones, Harry Maguire, Luke Shaw

England could also line up with an unchanged back four. John Stones and Harry Maguire’s relationship at centre-back has strengthened.

There remains a debate over whether Trent Alexander-Arnold should be given the chance to impress at right-back. The Liverpool man has had his defensive ability scrutinised in recent months – but Kieran Trippier was hardly fantastic against the States. Kyle Walker is another option having recovered from his groin injury.

Midfielders: Jordan Henderson, Declan Rice, Mason Mount

Wide-ranging reports suggest Jude Bellingham will be rested against Wales. Bellingham has been one of England’s best performers so far and Southgate needs the 19-year-old to be fresh for the knockout rounds.

Jordan Henderson is reportedly the man who will come in for Bellingham. The 32-year-old replaced the Borussia Dortmund starlet in the second-half of the draw with the USA.

Mason Mount’s place is under threat following criticism of his own performances. Southgate might choose to give Kalvin Phillips some minutes, with the Manchester City midfielder now fully fit after a shoulder problem.

The England boss also has the option of someone like James Maddison or Conor Gallagher.

Attackers: Phil Foden, Harry Kane, Raheem Sterling

Much of the post-USA discourse has centred around Foden’s lack of action in Qatar. England’s most technically gifted star was a late substitute in the 6-2 thumping of Iran, before being left on the bench entirely on Friday night as England chased a goal.

Southgate is adamant that Foden will not play in midfield as he rarely features there for Man City. So replacing Bellingham or Mount is out of the equation.

The 22-year-old could instead come in for Bukayo Saka – the star of the win over Iran but one of the players who struggled against the USA. Harry Kane will be determined to start despite concerns over his ankle, while Raheem Sterling must finally step up at a World Cup.
