England lost the European Championship on penalties on Sunday night, Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Bukayo Saka all missing from the spot in the shootout. There was pandemonium inside Wembley when The Three Lions led inside two minutes through left-back Luke Shaw’s brilliant half-volley. But Leonardo Bonucci pulled the Italians level in the second half to force extra time, in which neither team could be split. That forced the match to spot-kicks and in front of the England fans, substitutes Rashford, Sancho and Saka all missed as Italy won 3-2 Express Sport rates and slates. England players after their defeat.

England player ratings vs Italy

Jordan Pickford – 7

Was not troubled before the break. Great save from Chiesa early in second-half and did his best with the equalising goal. Denied Belotti and Jorginho in the shootout.

Kyle Walker –  7

Has produced mature performances throughout this tournament. And this was no different. Great decoy run for Shaw’s goal.

John Stones – 7

Looked totally at ease. Ciro Immobile caused him few problems. Seemed to glide through this testing 90 minutes with the minimum of fuss.

Harry Maguire – 7

Nervous early on but was his usual dominant self in the air throughout. Is turning into an unflappable rock at the heart of this defence.

Kieran Trippier – 6

Superb flighted far-post cross for the opening goal. Good distribution and was disciplined in tracking Insigne.

Declan Rice – 9

His driving runs caused the Italians no end of problems. Disruptive influence in midfield as the Azzurri looked to make their superiority tell. Powerful, authoritative.

Kalvin Phillips – 7

Held centre ground and gave Rice licence to roam. Effective and sensible with his distribution. Workhorse who pulled it all together.

Luke Shaw – 7

Arrived unseen at the far post to give his side a dream start. Has grown into this England team and is starting to revel in his role.

Mason Mount – 5

Asked to take a position on the left and linked well with Shaw to start. But his influence waned as the game wore on.

Raheem Sterling – 6

Allowed to roam and caused chaos, particularly in the first-half.

Harry Kane – 7

Dropped deep and gave Italy’s twin centre-halves nothing to mark. Intelligent link-up play assisted opening goal. On top of his game.

Substitutes

Bukayo Saka (on for Tripper, min 71) – 5

Missed his pen.

Jordan Henderson (on for Rice, min 74) – 5

Jack Grealish (on for Mount, min 99) – 6

Marcus Rashford (on for Henderson, min 120) – 5

Missed his pen.

Italy ratings

Gianluigi Donnarumma – 8

Had little to do – what he did was done with confidence. Ended the hero in the shoot-out. Cometh the hour, come the man.

Giovanni Di Lorenzo – 5

Was dragged into the middle and failed to spot Luke Shaw at the far post. Lost his individual battle against the Manchester United man.

Leonardo Bonucci – 6

Looked a lost soul as England steered clear of him. Dragged out wide on occasion. Given a thorough examination. His equalising goal saved his evening.

Giorgio Chiellini – 7

Began to step forward when he realised he had no-one to mark. Was never exposed, however, and the skipper will be pleased with his efforts.

Emerson – 6

Nowhere to be seen for the opening goal. Fortunate not to be booked for a late challenge on Declan Rice. Improved from a shaky start.

Jorginho – 6

A slow start, grew into it. Started popping balls around as the Azzurri tried to find a way back. But he was dominated by England’s midfield. Could have seen red late on for a tackle on Jack Grealish.

Nicolo Barella – 5

Another who was by-passed early on as the Three Lions tore into their final opponents. An early second-half booking and he was substituted.

Marco Verratti – 6

Started to up the tempo after England’s whirlwind start. Prompted and probed but did not do it in areas that hurt.

Federico Chiesa – 6

Escaped Declan Rice’s attentions in the first-half and was unlucky with a shot that whistled wide. Shackled well by the Three Lions overall.

Lorenzo Insigne – 7

The winger was clearly a marked man from the first whistle. England doubled up on him but his class still told. Italy’s star performer.

Ciro Immobile – 4

Starved of service the striker was totally dominated by England’s twin rocks at the back. No surprise when Roberto Mancini took him off.

Substitutes

Bryan Cristante (on for Barella, min 55) – 6

Domenico Berardi 6 (on for Immobile, min 55) – 6

Federico Bernardeschi (on for Chiesa, min 86) – 6

Manuel Locatelli (on for Verratti, min 96) – 6

Alessandro Florenzi (on for Emerson, min 118) – 6
