England fans are pleading for ITV to bring back Clive Tyldesley after Sam Matterface's 'embarrassing' and 'awful' commentary against San Marino.

Tyldesley, 66, was replaced as the broadcaster's main commentator by former Sky Sports News host Matterface in July last year.

He took to social media following the announcement to say he was "upset, annoyed and baffled" by the move, an opinion seemingly shared by large swathes of Three Lions fans.

Matterface has divided opinion since he was promoted last summer, and he had supporters complaining once more as Harry Kane scored England's third goal of the evening against San Marino.

The strike, which broke a 113-year old record for goals by an England striker in a calendar year, was greeted by Matterface with: "The way he’s going he’s going to have more records than HMV."

That prompted howls of derision on social media and calls for Tyldesley to be given his old job back.

One person said: "More records than HMV’ … can someone put an end to Sam Matterface on commentary, I can’t do this anymore."

Someone else tweeted: "Never mind the bad language Sam Matterface, you need to apologise for the HMV Harry Kane records 'joke'."

A third person demanded Matterface should be "sacked on the spot" for the gag, while someone else moaned: "Christ Sam Matterface is an awful commentator. ‘Going to have more records than HMV’."

Another Twitter user commented: "Did Sam Matterface really just say Kane will have more records than HMV!!! Please bring back Clive Tyldesley."

In an interview earlier this year, Tyldesley claimed he considered "storming out" of his meeting with ITV after he was told he was being replaced as the broadcaster's main commentator.

"I could have stormed out, but I thought, no I quite fancy commentating on France versus Italy," Tyldesley told the Daily Telegraph.

"Once the decision has been taken you have to absorb it, realise it's not the end of the world. It's nice if you're missed a little bit."

Tyldesley added: "I don't think ITV replaced me with a younger man for the sake of that, I think they replaced me with a different kind of commentator.

"And even though I was shocked by the decision and didn't agree with it, I can accept it, because Sam commentates in a different way."
