England fans lost for words as Phil Foden left on the bench in USA clash

England supporters were perplexed and enraged in equal measure after Gareth Southgate opted to leave Phil Foden on the bench throughout the entirety of his side's 0-0 draw with the USA.

The Manchester City star, who has been brilliant for his club so far this season, was left watching on as the Three Lions slumped to a goal-less draw in Qatar for their second World Cup group game.

Southgate's tactics and conservative attitude – a complete about-face to the side's 6-2 win over Iran in the first game – stumped and frustrated England supporters, with particular anger aimed at his decision to leave Foden out.

One fan savaged: "Do you ever deep how mad it is arguably the greatest ever manager picks Foden every week but this ex Middlesborough chancer doesn’t pick him, the audacity."

Another blasted: "Every single person that watched the game could see that Foden had to come on for Mount except Southgate. He is the reason this talented England squad will never win anything."

A third fired: "So what has Foden done to Southgate? Answers on a postcard because this is shocking."

One raged: "A reminder that Phil Foden plays every key game for the best football team on the planet. But apparently cannot even get off the bench for an #ENG team which can’t string three passes together."

A last one growled: "How Southgate has watched 90 minutes of that shambles, and decided that Phil Foden couldn’t make a difference.. is absolutely criminal."

Indeed, England could not continue their dazzling form that served them so well in the game against Iran. Harry Kane squandered a slight chance early on over the bar – while his final and best chance was a header over the bar late-on following a free-kick that was swung in.

Their opponents looked more hungry on the night, while they controlled most of the proceedings and arguably deserved to take home all three points going into their final group stage fixture.

England have Wales in the next game – and a chance for the Red Dragons to ruin England's campaign will no doubt be on their agenda.
