England suffered penalty heartbreak once again as Italy prevailed 3-2 on spot-kicks after a 1-1 draw to win the Euro 2020 final at Wembley.

Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho were brought on in the depths of extra-time by Gareth Soutgate to take penalties, but both missed as Gianluigi Donnarumma made himself the hero for Italy.

Jordan Pickford made two saves, including from penalty specialist Jorginho, but Donnarumma’s stop from Bukayo Saka won it for Italy.

Luke Shaw’s brilliant half-volley had given England the lead after just two minutes in front of a raucous Wembley crowd but Italy grew into the match and levelled in the second half.

Leonardo Bonucci tapped home from a corner after Pickford saved from Marco Verratti and England hung on through extra-time to reach penalties.

But it wasn’t to be for Southgate’s side, who were well beaten on spot-kicks by Roberto Mancini’s wily side.

England vs Italy LIVE

  • England: Pickford; Walker, Stones, Maguire; Trippier, Phillips, Rice, Shaw; Mount, Sterling, Kane.
  • Italy: Donnarumma; Di Lorenzo, Chiellini, Bonucci, Emerson; Jorginho, Verratti, Barella; Insigne, Chiesa, Immobile.
  • Luke Shaw half-volleys England in front after just 1 minute and 57 seconds at Wembley
  • Leonardo Bonucci nets from close range to level for Italy in the 67th minute
  • Match goes to penalties after 120 minute stalemate at Wembley
  • Donnarumma saves from Sancho and Saka as Italy win shoot-out 3-2.
  • Giorgio Chiellini lifts the European Championship trophy at Wembley

11.22pm: That’s that. England have suffered another penalty shoot-out defeat. Italy have won a sixth major trophy. Gianluigi Donnarumma is the hero. England will come again – their three penalty missers are aged 23, 21 and 19. Good night.

11.16pm: Chiellini goes and gets the trophy and carries it over to his team-mates. He lifts it high above his head and the confetti comes down inside Wembley.

11.14pm: England’s players have got onto the stage to collect their medals, but they have all taken they straight off from around their necks.

11.08pm: We are now awaiting the post-match ceremony now. England will collect their runners-up medals, while Italy captain Giorgio Chiellini will lift the famous trophy.

11.05pm: A word for Jordan Pickford, who saved two penalties in that shoot-out. The Everton goalkeeper was brilliant and at no fault for England’s defeat. His stop from Jorginho in particular was wonderful.

Ultimately England’s defeat was about their own misses, from Rashford, Sancho and Saka – and Donnarumma’s skill.

11.02pm: Gareth Southgate and his players are walking around the Wembley pitch clapping the home fans while Italy celebrate their victory.

10.58pm: In the midst of the celebrations, Leonardo Bonucci grabbed a camera lense and screamed “It’s coming Rome!” It wasn’t to be for Gareth Southgate’s side, who have once again fallen foul of penalty kicks.

Italy have won 3-2 on penalties. Rashford and Sancho were brought on in extra-time to take penalties. Rashford missed and Sancho’s shot was saved before Donnarumma kept out Saka to win it for Mancini’s side.

Saka steps up. Donnarumma saves once again and Italy have won. England have lost on penalties once again.

Jorginho can win it for Italy. The penalty specialist steps up AND PICKFORD SAVES IT. Wow. Pickford guesses correctly and pushes it onto the post. Huge, huge save. It remains 3-2 to Italy.

Sancho is up. It’s saved. He side-foots and Donnarumma picks correctly, pushing away his effort. It’s 3-2 and Italy can win it next.

Bernardeschi straight down the middle. Pickford dives to his right and Italy score. They lead 3-2.

Rashford is next. Oh no. Rashford delays his run-up, stutters and drags his penalty onto the post. It’s level again at 2-2.

Bonucci is under pressure now for Italy. The experienced defender steps up, with whistles in Wembley. Wow, he stutters his run-up and beats Pickford with a side-footer. 2-2.

Maguire for England. Smashes it into the top corner! What a penalty from the England defender. England 2-1 up.

Belotti is next. A long wait… and Pickford saves. He dives to his left and pushes it away! The score remains 1-1.

Kane is England’s first taker. He buries his brilliantly in the bottom corner. Donnarumma goes the right way but can’t stop it. 1-1.

Berardi is first up for Italy, who are taking in front of England’s fans. He calmly sends Pickford the wrong way. 1-0 Italy.

Italy beat Spain 4-2 on penalties in the semi-final. Donnarumma was outstanding in that game.

FULL-TIME. ITALY 1-1 ENGLAND. We have a penalty shoot-out.

30 + 2 mins: Not an ideal way to see out a game in added time of extra-time. Rashford has completed his duties at right-back and we are on the brink of penalties.

30+1 mins: Blimey! Bernardeschi puts in a brilliant ball which is flicked on at the near post. England, with Rashford playing right-back, are holding on. Three minutes of additional time remaining.

30 mins: SUBSTITUTIONS. Here they come. Jordan Henderson and Kyle Walker are the changes for Rashford and Sancho. Italy have a corner…

29 mins: Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho are on the touchline, but are yet to come on. Will England get the chance to bring them on for penalties? Italy have the ball.

28 mins: SUBSTITUTIONS. Alessandro Florenzi is on for Emerson. That is Mancini’s sixth and final sub.

27 mins: Bernardeschi has a shot which is blocked by Stones. Italy appeal for a penalty but thankfully Kuipers waves away the calls.

25 mins: Jorginho gets away with just a yellow card and Phillips’ free-kick is easily claimed by the giant Donnarumma.

23 mins: Grealish wins a loose ball in midfield as Jorginho stamps on the England midfielder’s knee. We’ve got a long break here as the Aston Villa man gets treatment.

20 mins: Henderson puts a brilliant ball through to Sterling, but he can’t get past the wily Chiellini, who wins the ball by the byline. England are having a good spell here.

19 mins: Belotti goes down the other end and puts a good low ball across England’s six-yard box, but he was offside. The linesman could have saved some nerves by raising his flag there.

18 mins: England get the Walker long throw out and it nearly pays off. Grealish has a shot blocked before Kane clips a dangerous ball into the area. Donnarumma comes and just about does enough after the ball clears Stones.

17 mins: Bernardeschi has an early chance with a long-range free-kick, but Pickford saves and gathers it at the second attempt.

16 mins: We’re back at it. It’s only going to get more nervy from here on in I’m afraid.

HALF-TIME. The answer is no. Shaw floats it to the back post, but the whistle has already gone for an Italy free-kick.

15+1 mins: England have a free-kick near the box after a handball by Locatelli. Can Shaw do anything with it?

13 mins: Oooohhh errr. Walker misses a tackle on Emerson, who crosses into Bernardeschi. Pickford gets a hand to it to get it clear, but luckily the ball had already been out of play. England goal kick. Don’t know what I was worried about.

11 mins: Grealish is sent away down the left by Shaw, but he can’t quite link up with Saka via an inventive back-heel.

9 mins: SUBSTITUTION. Here he comes. Jack Grealish is on for Mason Mount. Can the Aston Villa playmaker make a difference?

7 mins: England’s corner comes out to Phillips, who has a speculative attempt on the volley. It’s well wide of Donnarumma’s goal.

6 mins: Sterling races down the left side after a fortunate bounce of the ball for England, but Chiellini is across to snuff out the threat.

SUBSTITUTION. Meanwhile, Marco Verratti is off, replaced by Manuel Locatelli.

3 mins: All about handling the pressure and fitness levels now. England are bound to be tired, having chased the ball more than their opponents. Meanwhile, Italy’s four substitutions to England’s two gives them another potential advantage.

Extra-time: So 30 more minutes. Mancini brings on Andrea Belotti for Lorenzo Insigne, meaning the Italy boss has how changed his entire front three. No more changes for England yet.

10.02pm: What does Southgate do now? Jack Grealish remains on the bench, with just two of his six substitutions used.

FULL-TIME ITALY 1-1 ENGLAND. Phillips’ free-kick is easily dealt with by Italy and there’s the final whistle. Extra-time it is.

96 mins: YELLOW for Chiellini, who close-lines Saka on the touchline as the Arsenal youngster threatens to race away. One last chance to throw the ball forward for England…

95 mins: Hearts in mouths time. Cristante gets to the byline and stands up a cross to the back post which Walker casually chests back towards Pickford.

94 mins: Italy are keeping the ball and probing, but to no avail so far. Two more minutes before 30 minutes of extra-time.

91 mins: Shaw plays a deep free-kick into Maguire, but his header back into the mix drops for Italy, who then win a free-kick of their own for Henderson’s clip on Verratti.

90 mins: SIX minutes of added time, following Chiesa’s injury and the streaker on the pitch.

88 mins: A brilliant run by Sterling who shows a great turn of pace to beat a few Italian defenders. He runs out of road, however, and it’s a goal kick to Italy.

87 mins: Another delay because some idiot has got onto the pitch. Just minutes of normal time remaining. Can either team grab a dramatic winner before extra-time?

85 mins: SUBSTITUTION. Some good news for England. Chiesa, who has been a thorn in their side, is going off to be replaced by Federico Bernardeschi.

84 mins: The Italians are outraged as Kuipers gets the yellow card out for Insigne, who trips Phillips. Another free-kick in a decent position for England. Mount and Saka over it.

Stones can’t get any meaningful contact on it and Shaw wastes the second ball.

83 mins: Mount gets to the byline, but his cut-back hits Saka, who can’t control it. Better from England though.

81 mins: There’s a break in play after Chiesa was fouled by Phillips. He’s taking his time to get back up and Mancini is using the opporunity to talk tactics with Cristante.

79 mins: England win a free-kick after Saka is brought down by Verratti. Phillips takes it short to Shaw, but his long pass can’t find Maguire. A set piece could be England’s way back into it. They need to use them better.

78 mims: Maguire steps out and just about wins a free-kick to relieve some pressure. England really need to take the sting out of the game. It’s getting nervy at Wembley to say the least.

76 mins: It’s all Italy now. England are penned in, as Maguire launches a long ball into the stands.

74 mins: SUBSTITUTION. Jordan Henderson is on for Declan Rice, moments after Insigne sends a chance over the bar from Bonucci’s brilliant long pas.

70 mins: SUBSTITUTION. Kieran Trippier has come off, replaced by Bukayo Saka. It looks as though Southgate is changing the formation back to a 4-3-3.

69 mins: You have to say, it had been coming. Pickford does really well to keep out a header by Verratti, but the ball strikes the post and drops perfectly for Bonucci to tap in.

67 mins: GOAL ITALY 1-1. Leonardo Bonucci. England fail to deal with a corner and Bonucci picks up the pieces from close range, smashing past Pickford.

66 mins: Another nervy moment for England. Chiesa swings in a brilliant cross from the left-hand side and Maguire heads over his own bar for a corner.

64 mins: England are back up the other end. Donnarumma tips over a header from Stones and Italy deal with the second delivery from a corner better.

62 mins: Chiesa is a real danger. England need to get tighter to the Italy winger, who drifts inside and gets a yard inside the box. His low shot is well saved by Pickford, but that was another warning sign for England.

60 mins: England just trying to calm things down. Phillips and Rice are getting through an unbelievable amount of work in the middle of the pitch. Southgate’s side are sitting deep and waiting for the chance to spring a counter.

57 mins: Insigne is now playing down the middle, with Berardi and Chiesa either side of him. And the Napoli man immediately shows what he can do, gathering a deflected shot from Chiesa and getting to the byline before forcing Pickford into a save in front of his face. Italy growing into this, you feel.

56 mins: He can. But Maguire cannot guide his header on target, with his effort going way over the bar.

55 mins: YELLOW. Bonucci hacks down Sterling on the touchline and goes into the book. A decent free-kick position for England here. Can Shaw find a team-mate in the box?

54 mins: SUBSTITUTIONS. We have Roma midfielder Bryan Cristante and Sassuolo winger Domenico Berardi coming onto the pitch for Nicolo Barella and Ciro Immobile. Big moves by Mancini.

52 mins: The importance of Walker is shown again as he calmly heads back Chiesa’s ball aimed for Insigne back to Pickford.

50 mins: If your nerves are frayed then you might have watched this through your fingers. Sterling fouls Insigne on the edge of the penalty area, giving away a dangerous free-kick. But the Napoli forward can’t get his curling shot on target from the edge of the D. England breathe a sigh of relief.

48 mins: Big shout for an England penalty as Sterling takes Shaw’s pass and bursts past Bonucci and Chiellini. Kuipers is not interested.

47 mins: We have our first yellow card of the match. Italy midfielder Barella goes into the book for a foul on Kane.

46 mins: OK, we’re off again as ‘Freed From Desire’ is sung by the England fans.

9.04pm: How are your nerves? It all feels rather surreal for me.

9.01pm: A few more minutes to gather your thoughts – get a drink – and then return for what will hopefully be 45 more minutes of England dominance.

8.54pm: Right, we have an update from Wembley Stadium on the chaotic scenes before kick-off. Officials previously claimed that no fans without tickets made their way into the stadium, but they have now confirmed that is not the case.

“There was a breach of security and a small group of people got into the stadium,” a spokesperson said in a statement. “We are now working closely with stadium stewards and security to remove these people. Anyone inside the stadium without a ticket will be instantly ejected.”

HALF-TIME: Italy 0-1 England. And there’s the whistle. A great first half for England, who scored early and have looked composed and confident since. It’s been a game of few chances and England took theirs’ after just two minutes.

45+4 mins: Bonucci of all people lines up a speculative long shot from distance. Guess what? It went nowhere near Pickford’s goal. Italy frustrated as half-time approaches.

45+2 mins: Lovely combination between Shaw, Mount and Sterling, but it comes to nothing on the edge of the box.

45+1 mins: Good block from Stones, who denies Immobile before Verratti scuffs a follow-up shot straight at Pickford. Italy finishing the half the stronger side here.

45 mins: There will be four minutes of added time after Jorginho’s injury.

43 mins: Referee Bjorn Kuipers is happy to let a few challenges on England’s forwards go, much to the annoyance of England’s fans. But we’re nearly at half-time and the vast majority of those inside Wembley will be delighted with how it’s gone.

41 mins: It’s descended very much into a midfield battle over the past 15 minutes or so. England are doing well to limit the influence of Jorginho and Verratti.

Meanwhile, watch the England video below to see how calm Southgate was when Shaw’s goal went in. Ice in the veins.

38 mins: Emerson lunches in on Rice and England are awarded a free-kick. Rice felt that one and is limping slightly as he gets up.

36 mins: Great play from man of the moment Shaw, who beats Di Lorenzo and gets a dangerous low cross into the box. It evades Kane at the near post and is cleared by Emerson. Promising signs from the hosts, though.

35 mins: Ooohhh, scary moment there for England. Chiesa brushes off Rice and runs at the England defence before unleashing a powerful left-footed shot from range. It’s well hit but wide of Pickford’s near post.

34 mins: Mount and Sterling nearly combine brilliantly after Kane wins the aerial battle, but the Chelsea midfielder’s reverse pass back to Sterling is cut out.

33 mins: Graeme Jones is deep in conversation with Southgate on the touchline after a spell of Italy possession comes to an end with an England goal kick.

30 mins: Jorginho snuck back on the pitch. It appeared he clashed knees with Sterling earlier on. The first third of the match has flown by.

26 mins: England’s tactics are clear already. Southgate wants his players to stay as wide as possible in order to try and stretch the experienced by ageing Italian defence. Walker pings a crossfield pass out to Trippier, but he’s offside this time.

25 mins: Italy try to break down the left side, but Rice cuts out the attempted pass into Immobile and his midfield partner, Phillips, tidies up.

23 mins: Jorginho has hobbled off the pitch to receive further treatment from the Italian physios. So at the moment Italy are down to 10 men. Mancini won’t want to lose Jorginho, who is Italy’s tempo-setter in the middle of the park.

21 mins: Jorginho is down complaining of an injury. This could be a huge blow to the Italians.

18 mins: Di Lorenzo puts a pass straight into touch, looking for Chiesa on the right flank. Cue the massive “Waheeyyy” from the home crowd.

15 mins: Some more on Luke Shaw. What a tournament he’s had. A few years ago he was nowhere near England’s team and now he has scored in a European Championship final. His goal comes after three assists in the tournament too. Excellent stuff from the Manchester United man.

13 mins: Right, I’ve settled – and it seems as though the game has too now after a frantic start.

9 mins: I’ve just about got my composure back after that incredible start. What an impact for Trippier, who was brought in for Bukayo Saka by Southgate.

Kyle Walker’s overlapping run gave Trippier the space and he picked out Shaw perfectly at the back post. What a time to score your first goal for England.

2 mins: OH MY GOD. Luke Shaw has scored. The fastest ever goal in a European final!

Kieran Trippier swings in a cross from the right side and picks out the Manchester United left-back at the back post. His half-volley is powerful at the near post and England are ahead within three minutes!

8pm: And, after the knee, we’re off!

7.57pm: Now for God Save The Queen, which is belted out by Gareth Southgate, his staff and all the players. Nearly there. Feeling nervous?

7.56pm: Now for the anthems. It’s Italy up first with their rousing upbeat tune. Roberto Mancini and his staff are once again in matching grey suits and the players are blasting it out. They’re pumped.

7.53pm: Now we have Portugal’s match-winner from 2016, Eder, bringing the real trophy out onto the field. What a moment for him!

7.52pm: Those inside Wembley are now being treated to a massive opening ceremony, with a giant trophy and lights galore.

The atmosphere has reached fever pitch. We are now approaching kick-off.

7.45pm: Inside the stadium, on our TV screens, the good side of the atmosphere is building with the PA system blasting out Neil Diamond’s ‘Sweet Caroline’, which has become the unofficial anthem of England’s run to the final.

Great stuff, with the BBC pundits Gary Lineker, Rio Ferdinand and Alan Shearer joining in.

7.42pm: Another video which goes some way to showing the chaotic scenes at Wembley Stadium.

There have now been multiple reports of people getting past security and into the stadium without tickets.

7.37pm: Kieran Trippier, into the side in the place of Bukayo Saka, has promised England will play “attractive” football tonight.

“It’s an unbelievable occasion, you see as I was coming into the stadium,” he told ITV Sport. “The support from the fans, they deserve it most importantly.

“We just want to play attractive football, good football throughout the tournament and win the final.

“We’re one step closer, as soon as that whistle goes we’re going to give everything.”

7.30pm: And here’s Southgate’s explanation for Phil Foden’s exclusion from the 23-man squad.

“It’s very difficult,” he told ITV Sport. “It’s not something that’s going to keep him out for a long time, but unfortunately he wasn’t able to run properly yesterday.

“It’s heartbreaking for him and a disappointment for us.”

Foden picked up a knock after the Denmark game and has been left out alongside Ben White and Ben Chilwell.

7.27pm: Gareth Southgate has explained why he’s brought in Kieran Trippier for Bukayo Saka.

“Italy cause you a tactical problem, they’ve got a familiar way of playing and it’s a problem that’s difficult to resolve with a winger because he ends up defending in your own third of the pitch,” he told ITV Sport.

“So we want to keep our attacking players a lot higher up, which we hope is going to cause them a problem on the counter attack as well.”

7.21pm: Alan Shearer has paid tribute to Gareth Southgate on the BBC.

“We’ve got a smart, intelligent manager who understands what it takes to play for your country,” he said. “He’s played under very very good managers. He knows what it takes, he’s been a part of that.

“He knows how to break the cliques up. He knows how to make everyone feel involved and it’s noticeable that even after games he’s first to mention the guys who haven’t played just to make them feel part of that squad and it’s such a special feeling because being away in a bubble for five weeks like these guys have had is not easy and Gareth has made it fun and they’re getting their rewards now. It’s great to see.”

7.07pm: Rio Ferdinand is certainly feeling confident. BBC presenter Gary Linkeker posited that there might be a “long evening lies ahead” before Ferdinand cut in.

“I can’t disagree with you more,” he said. “I feel so comfortable. It’s what these guys have been able to make me feel like. It’s been the best sleep I’ve had in about two years. That’s how confident and comfortable I am but I think it’s testament to them. I think these guys know this is an opportunity to make history. It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity for them. The most important thing is to win it but two, please enjoy it, please enjoy it.

“These boys have got the chance to change history for this country and this tournament.”

6.59pm: More worrying scenes to report, I’m afraid. The video below, taken by a fan outside Wembley, shows supporters pushing past security to get inside the stadium.

We will have to wait and see if the behaviour of a minority has any affect on England’s first major final for 55 years.

6.56pm: So, leaving aside the chaos outside the stadium for a minute, what do you make of England’s side?

Southgate has not picked an unchanged side during the tournament, so in a way it’s no surprise to see another changed team. But Saka played well against Denmark and can perhaps feel aggrieved to lose his place to Trippier.

Southgate’s decisions have worked up until this point, so we should have faith. But who would you have liked to see in the starting XI? Let me know in the comments section below.

6.47pm: England’s 23-man squad is missing Ben White, Ben Chilwell and Phil Foden.

Foden missed training with a knock and is unfortunately not fit enough to make the bench for the game.

6.45pm: Italy’s team is in and they have sprung no surprises at all, sticking with the same side which got past Spain on penalties.

Italy: Donnarumma; Di Lorenzo, Chiellini, Bonucci, Emerson; Jorginho, Verratti, Barella; Insigne, Chiesa, Immobile.

6.40pm: BREAKING. We have England’s team, and as expected Gareth Southgate has brought in Kieran Trippier for Bukayo Saka.

That means a change in formation from 4-3-3 to 3-4-3, with Mason Mount moving forward to fill Saka’s position on the right of attack.

Kyle Walker will play at right centre-back, with Luke Shaw pushing forward to play as a wing-back on the left.

England: Pickford; Walker, Stones, Maguire; Trippier, Phillips, Rice, Shaw; Mount, Sterling, Kane.

6.37pm: You can read more about the chaotic scenes at Wembley in our news story here.

6.33pm: We’ve now received a statement from Wembley Stadium about the trouble on Wembley Way.

“We are dealing with an incident which occurred at the outer perimeter area of the stadium, with support from the police.

“Safety measures were quickly activated in the relevant areas and there were no security breaches of people without tickets getting inside the stadium.”

ITV are reporting that the stadium has gone into ‘temporary lockdown’. We’ll give you more once we have it.

6.29pm: Watch the video below to get a taste of the chaotic scenes outside Wembley right now, with stewards and police struggling to deal with fans intent on breaking into the stadium.

Hopefully things will get under control once the majoirity of ticket holders are inside the stadium.

6.24pm: Right, onto the football. The BBC’s coverage has started and after a predictable Gary Lineker intro, we have ourselves a scene-setting montage.

Lovely stuff. Just over 90 minutes to go until kick-off.

6.18pm: We’re getting plenty of reports of unsavoury scenes outside Wembley right now, with fans fighting, littering and trying to gain access into the stadium.

Chris Kamara says he had to dogde bottles to get into the ground, while there have been multiple videoes of stewards and police struggling to deal with surging fans.

6.12pm: The 8pm kick-off time always had the potential to cause problems outside Wembley, with England fans waiting all day for the big game.

It seems the occasion has got to some, with a group of fans videoed breaking fences to try and get past stewards and police into the stadium.

You can read the Express’ breaking news story here.

6pm: England have been very fortunate not to have any serious injury concerns throughout this Euro 2020 campaign.

However, Southgate says Manchester City attacker Phil Foden is a doubt for tonight’s match after skipping training on Saturday.

The Three Lions could stick with four at the back so they can match up Italy’s three-man midfield, or switch to a 3-4-3 formation.

There have been reports that Bukayo Saka could be replaced by Kieran Trippier, with Southgate switching to a three-man defence.

Of course, we will provide the team news as soon as it lands.

5.45pm: Good evening and welcome to Express Sport’s live coverage of England against Italy in the Euro 2020 final.

Gareth Southgate will be hoping that home advantage will count so the Three Lions can end 55 years of hurt.

Not since the 1966 World Cup have England even featured in a major tournament final.
