After being labelled “the most hated man in France”, Emiliano Martinez has once again rubbed salt into Les Bleus’ wounds with a fresh remark about Aurelien Tchouameni’s missed penalty in the World Cup final. The Real Madrid midfielder fired his spot-kick wide during the tense shootout as Argentina’s boisterous goalkeeper won a mental battle of wits with the 22-year-old.
Prior to the penalty, Martinez threw the ball away to rattle his rival before Tchouameni eventually fired wide of the mark.
Kingsley Coman had already missed from 12 yards as Martinez played a lead role in helping Argentina win their third World Cup to secure national hero status.
But the Aston Villa shot-stopper is not universally popular after taunting Kylian Mbappe in the aftermath of the final and now Martinez has stuck the knife in once more, mocking Tchouameni for the miss.
“I knew the boy was going to be nervous,” Martinez told the crowd in his hometown of Mar del Plata.
“I tried to mentally play him and he shot wide. He screwed it up.”
Former France defender Adil Rami has already torn into Martinez for his lack of sportsmanship, labelling the Argentina No 1 the “biggest s*** in world football.”
He wrote on social media: “The most hated man [in France]. The Golden Glove was for Yassine Bounou. Mbappe traumatised the Argentines so much that they celebrated the victory against our national team more than their World Cup.”
Martinez urged his Argentina team-mates to conduct a minute’s silence for Mbappe as they danced in the dressing room after their victory.

He then held up a doll with Mbappe’s face taped over it during the trophy parade in Buenos Aires.
Mbappe has kept quiet on the goalkeeper’s antics and is already focused on club football again after making an early return to Paris Saint-Germain training.
Meanwhile, Martinez is still in South America and is expected to miss Aston Villa’s Boxing Day clash with Liverpool.
With Robin Olsen also nursing an injury, Unai Emery is facing a potential headache in goal for the meeting with the Reds.
Martinez has since found himself linked with a host of big clubs including Bayern Munich, Manchester United, Chelsea and Tottenham following his World Cup heroics.
However, he is expected to stay at Villa after joining the club from Arsenal in the summer of 2020 in a £20million deal.
Villa also extended his contract in January with his current deal now set to run until 2027.
Bayern Munich are not thought to be targeting the Argentina shot-stopper despite media speculation after Manuel Neuer suffered a broken leg while skiing.
