Egypt star Mohamed Salah appears shaken as he has head protected by security
Mohamed Salah had to be escorted from the pitch by security after Egypt were denied a place at the 2022 World Cup following yet another dramatic penalty shootout defeat to Senegal.
The Liverpool forward looked visibly shaken as he was hurried down the tunnel by two bodyguards, who were covering his head as if to shield it from missiles while 50,000 raucous Senegal fans celebrated in the stands.
Sadio Mane scored the winning penalty, just as he did in the Africa Cup of Nations final last month, to break Egyptian hearts and crush the dreams of his club team-mate.
Egypt took a 1-0 lead into last night's second-leg, but the scores were level after just four minutes when Boulaye Dia's shot deflected in off Pharaohs defender Hamdi Fathi to put Senegal ahead.
The match eventually went to penalties, and Salah – desperate to actually take one this time – went first, but skied his effort into the stands. The first four spot-kicks of the shootout were missed in fact, as replays showed dozens of green lasers being shone into the eyes of the players.

Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy then gave Senegal the advantage by saving from Mostafa Mohamed at 2-1, giving Mane the chance to put Egypt to the sword for the second time in as many months.
He duly converted, clinching a World Cup spot for Senegal for just the third time in their history, while a dejected Salah was once again left reflecting on what might have been.
