EFL star disliked by Wrexham fans spotted ‘throwing punch’ at rival with no card

Sheffield United striker Billy Sharp was spotted throwing a punch at Luton Town defender Tom Lockyer in the Blades’ 1-0 defeat on Saturday.

Sharp has already made a name for himself with opposition fans recently after previously ranting about National League side Wrexham after they took the Blades to an FA Cup fourth round replay.

The 37-year-old was in the public eye again during United's defeat against Luton, which has now seen them lose four of their previous six league games. It has allowed Middlesbrough to close the gap on them in second to just four points.

Sharp, who started on the bench for the fourth game in succession, was introduced midway through the second half but to no avail on the scoreline. Instead, seemingly the only target he hit was the back of Lockyer’s head following the pairs tangle.

A long ball behind the defence was flicked on by strike-partner Oli McBurnie for Sharp to chase onto, but the veteran was unable to latch onto the ball with Lockyer shielding Sharp away from danger. That led to the striker appearing to swing a fist at Lockyer, wrapping his right arm round the back of the defender’s head.

Sharp was previously charged by the Football Association following his cup comments which "implied bias and/or attacked the referee’s integrity," during their FA Cup tie against Wrexham.

Fans were not impressed with the latest incident involving Sharp on Saturday. One wrote on Twitter: "The ref looking straight at it too. Think we need @Specsavers in here."

Whilst another revelled in Sharp’s and the Blades' lack of discipline, tweeting: “clear punch, ban incoming, Sheff United imploding”.

Sheffield United travel to Sunderland in midweek with the Championship’s automatic promotion race hotting up.
