Eduard Mendy’s action that caused clash after Liverpool equalised vs Chelsea

Edouard Mendy had a big role in the huge scuffle between Liverpool and Chelsea players.

The Premier League giants saw out a 1-1 draw at Anfield, both missing out on an opportunity to go top of the table.

While there were 29 attempts on goal between the sides, the most dramatic moment of the game came in the first-half additional minutes.

Players from both sides got involved in a fracas after Mohamed Salah slotted in an equaliser following a lengthy VAR review.

And footage from the match shows that Mendy, into his second season at Stamford Bridge, made a small motion that had a 'butterfly effect'.

In the clip, the Senegalese international is trying to figure out where Liverpool's top scorer is going to place his penalty.

But Reds captain Henderson is trying to put the shot-stopper off, running from a distance at the same time as Salah.

With Mendy beaten in the bottom-left corner, the Reds players wheel away in celebration – except for the midfielder.

Henderson runs to towards the fans behind the posts, with the away fans looking on glumly.

As the ball comes into his path, Mendy suddenly charges to kick it and whacks it straight into the 31-year-old's legs.

The Blues goalkeeper is immediately surrounded by Liverpool players before Romelu Lukaku and Cesar Azpilicueta come charging in to defend him.

From that, everyone except for Blues goal-scorer Kai Havertz and goalkeeper Alisson were involved.

Tensions were already high following the controversial decision to send off Chelsea right-back Reece James.

The Englishman had been judged to have used his arm to block an effort by Sadio Mane on the goal-line, with VAR over-ruling referee Anthony Taylor.

But the draw has seen both clubs miss out on an opportunity to go top of the Premier League table, having won their first two games.
