Edinson Cavani staying at Man Utd could majorly impact stance on Jadon Sancho

Edinson Cavani looks likely to stay at Manchester United next season, which could boost the club's chances of prising Jadon Sancho away from Borussia Dortmund this summer.

Cavani's current United deal is set to expire at the end of the season, with talks ongoing over a potential extension.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is desperate to keep the Uruguay striker, who has bagged 12 goals in 33 games for his side so far this term.

Solskjaer offered an encouraging update about contract discussions on Wednesday, saying: "We've had some good chats lately and even though the decision is still in his court, I'm still hopeful.

"And maybe even more so when you saw him on Thursday against Rome, and telling him 'when you do that in front of the Stretford End, that's magic'."

Should Cavani put pen to paper on a new contract as expected, United chiefs will be able to dedicate a greater chunk of their summer transfer budget towards a new right-sided attacker instead of a replacement upfront.

Sancho has been their top target for the past few years, only for Dortmund's £108million valuation to prove too steep.

But given the England international is set to enter the final two years of his contract next month, Manchester Evening News believe that asking price is likely to fall to around £75million in the summer transfer window.

  • That fee is certainly within United's reach and would also allow Solskjaer to go and add another centre-backs to his ranks as is being reported.

It is believed Sancho is keen to return to English football at the end of the season, four years after he departed Manchester City's youth setup to head to Dortmund.

The 21-year-old has racked up 133 appearances in his time at Signal Iduna Park, registering 46 goals and 62 assists.

He would provide Solskjaer with greater depth on the right flank next season, with Mason Greenwood his only natural option on that side this term.
