Former Manchester United front man Edinson Cavani has agreed to terminate his Valencia contract with the view to joining Argentine giants Boca Juniors. 

The 36-year-old penned a two-year contract with the La Liga side after leaving Old Trafford last summer but could only manage five league goals in a poor campaign. 

The Uruguayan icon has therefore agreed to end his spell at the Mestalla early with the Spanish club announcing his departure in a Tweet on Saturday. 

‘Thank you for everything [Edinson Cavani],’ it read. ‘Mestalla and Valencia will always be your home. Good luck with your new stage.’

Earlier in the week Cavani’s brother, Christian, had confirmed the veteran’s desire to make the move back to South America.

‘I have a good feeling that his arrival in Boca will be achieved,’ he told Football 12.  ‘This time is different from the others. His return to South America is all more on track.’

The ex-PSG and Napoli man reportedly had to pay around £1.3m to terminate his deal with Valencia, according to TYC Sports. 

Cavani’s move would bring an end to a glittering career in Europe dating back to his arrival in Serie A with Palermo in 2007.

Uruguay’s second highest goalscorer racked up team and personal accolades in Italy and France with Napoli and PSG, before signing with Manchester United in 2020. 

At Old Trafford, Cavani bagged 19 goals in 59 appearances before making a move to Spain last summer.
