Edinson Cavani breaks records on fans’ return to send club transfer message

Edinson Cavani has now matched a series of impressive stats during his time at Manchester United – proving that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer should look no further for his first-choice striker next season.

With Harry Kane's future in doubt thanks to his discontent at Tottenham, United have been linked with a summer approach -with Erling Haaland set to leave Dortmund in 2022.

However, their decision to agree a new 12-month deal with their veteran Uruguayan has shown their plans for the new season, and he proved his quality once again on Tuesday.

The 34-year-old lobbed Fulham's Alphonse Areola from all of 40 yards during the first-half, and he left the pitch with his head held high despite their eventual draw.

Cavani has now scored as many goals as Diego Forlan for United in the Premier League, grabbing his 10 goals in 37 fewer games than his former international colleague.

Cavani is now the only the third player to reach double figures for goals for United in a league season while aged 33 or over, following Teddy Sheringham in 2000-01 and Zlatan Ibrahimovic in 2016-17.

Cavani is also the second oldest player to reach 10 league goals in a Premier League season for United behind his former PSG strike partner Ibrahimovic who was 35 and 75 days.

Cavani is also the the third United player to reach 10+ league goals this season after Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford who have 18 and 11 respectively.

Solskjaer said of the chip: "Yeah and what a goal to score great composure.

"To lift it he has missed one of those chances against PSG in the Champions League

"And today he has just finished it off perfectly."

Adding: "His work rate and attitude and back-tackling… he's the best back-tackling striker in the world. The energy he gives everyone else is fantastic."
