Edinson Cavani 'agrees new one-year deal' to stay at Manchester United
Manchester United striker Edinson Cavani has put pen to paper and agreed a contract extension to remain at Old Trafford for one more season, according to reports.
The 34-year-old has been lethal in front of goal since joining on a free transfer last summer, netting 15 times in all competitions and laying on four assists – averaging a goal every 130 minutes in the Premier League.
He gave a remarkable display over two legs against Roma, scoring four times and setting up two further goals in the 8-5 win, and he continued that form with a superb header on Sunday against Aston Villa.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been delighted with Cavani’s impact since arriving at the club and has been desperate to keep him, with the Uruguayan having only signed a short-term, one-year deal last summer.
He had been heavily linked with a move back to South America with Argentinean giants Boca Juniors, but Solskjaer and United made a massive push to convince him to stay for one more season and potentially experience a full house at Old Trafford.
Now, according to Italian transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Cavani has at last been convinced to remain at United and has signed a new deal which will be officially announced in the next few days.
Once again it is a short-term deal, with Cavani still keen to play out his final days in South America, but he will be contracted to United for the duration of the 2021/22 season.
The former PSG striker’s decision owes greatly to the work Solskjaer has done in persuading him to stay, with the Norwegian regaling him with stories about what it is like to score in front of the Stretford End.
Aside from his goals, Cavani has also proven to be a very experienced and useful presence in the dressing room, imparting some of his goalscoring wisdom to youngster Mason Greenwood.
Solskjaer dropped a little hint that Cavani would be staying with United on Sunday, giving a wry smile when asked by Sky Sports if he hoped to be able to select the striker next season and replying: ‘Yeah his movement and his desire to score goals [is there].
‘It was a great cross from Marcus [Rashford]. We’re getting to learn Edinson as well and hopefully we can get to use him more next season.’
