Eddie Howe has credited Newcastle United supporters for helping his side make an ‘incredible start’ against Tottenham on Sunday.

Newcastle breezed into third place of the Premier League standings as a travelling Spurs side slumped to a 6-1 defeat at St James’ Park.

The hosts found themselves 5-0 up after just 21 minutes as strikes from Jacob Murphy, Joelinton, and Alexander Isak set them on their way to an emphatic victory.

Magpies boss Howe revelled in his side’s outstanding performance and explained that the over 50,000 strong crowd helped inspire Newcastle.

‘It was an incredible start, the crowd were incredible for us and it elevated out performance in that opening half-an-hour,’ Howe said on Sky Sports.

Newcastle fans created a cauldron of noise as they blew Tottenham away in their 6-1 victory

‘We did not play our own game against Aston Villa, so it was about realigning that.

‘We were lethal in our finishing and everything about that opening half hour is where we want to be.

‘We want progressive football, the lads have to take on a lot of information and they do that incredibly well,’ he added.

Sunday’s dominant victory means Newcastle are now unbeaten in all 12 clashes against London opposition this season.

Meanwhile, Tottenham’s Champions League qualification hopes have been left in tatters as they now sit six points adrift of 4th-placed Manchester United who have two games in-hand.

Spurs captain Hugo Lloris issued an apology to club supporters who made the long-distance trip to the north-east.

Lloris was criticised for failing to stop any of Newcastle’s opening five goals and was subsequently hooked by interim boss Cristian Stelliniat half-time.

The Frenchman explained that Tottenham had showed a ‘lack of fight’ against a relentless Newcastle outfit.
