Eberechi Eze set to make Southgate's extended England World Cup squad

Crystal Palace star Eberechi Eze set to be named in Gareth Southgate’s extended England squad of 55 PLAYERS for the World Cup… after a devastating Achilles rupture ruled him out of contention for Euro 2020

  • Gareth Southgate is set to name an extended World Cup squad by Friday
  • He can name up to 55 players, and Eberechi Eze is expected to make the cut
  • Eze is likely to be named in it after his strong start to the season at Crystal Palace
  • Eze was in Southgate’s provisional 33-man squad for the Euros last year
  • His chance to play at Euro 2020 was taken away when he ruptured his Achilles

Eberechi Eze is expected to be named in England’s provisional World Cup squad this week as the Crystal Palace attacker makes a late run for Qatar.

Eze is back on Gareth Southgate’s radar following an impressive start to the Premier League season with the Selhurst Park club.

Southgate is due to name an extended squad of up to 55 players, which will then be whittled down to 26 ahead of the tournament, by Friday.

And it is understood Eze is on course to be named in Southgate’s provisional party for the World Cup alongside team-mates Marc Guehi and Tyrick Mitchell.

Southgate is a big fan of Eze and has long monitored his performances with a view to naming him in the senior squad.

Indeed, Eze was picked in Southgate’s provisional 33-man squad for the European Championships last year – but an Achilles rupture robbed him of the chance of being named in the full party.

But having proved to Southgate that he is over the long-term injury, Eze is back in international contention.

It remains to be seen whether Eze can do enough to break into Southgate’s final 26-man squad for Qatar, which is expected to be named on November 10.

There is huge competition in the attacking areas and it is likely Eze will have to rely on injuries to have a realistic chance of making the final cut.

Nevertheless, his re-emergence into Southgate’s thinking is likely to see Eze handed his first international call-up sooner rather than later.

Liverpool’s Joe Gomez is also hopeful of being included in England’s preliminary squad as Southgate contends with a host of injury concerns in defence.
