Denzel Dumfries’ Inter Milan exit is now a ‘certainty’ with the Nerazzurri needing to raise cash over the next few months, according to reports from Italy. Chelsea and Manchester United have both kept tabs on the Dutchman, who has sparkled at the Qatar World Cup, but it’s the Blues who appear to have stolen a march ahead of the January transfer window.

A series of impressive World Cup displays have left Inter with an appreciating asset on their hands, which is convenient timing due to their financial situation. Manager Simone Inzaghi supposedly needs to auction off over £50million worth of talent by June next year, and selling Dumfries could be the key.

Italian outlet Coriere dello Sport claim that the flying wing-back’s exit from the San Siro is now ‘certain’ as Man Utd and Chelsea wait to pounce. The Red Devils are reportedly looking to bolster in the right-back department with manager Erik ten Hag wholly unconvinced by Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

However, it appears as though Chelsea hold the upper hand as Graham Potter’s side have been pronounced ‘big favourites’ to snap up Dumfries, whose stock could rise even further with the Netherlands still alive and kicking in Qatar.

His best performance to date came in the 3-1 win over the USA last week, putting Louis van Gaal’s side through to the quarter-finals. From wing-back, Dumfries burst forward time and again to rack up two assists and a well-taken volley, proving that he is one of the most productive players of his type in world football.

Although Chelsea are currently leading the race, it is not yet clear whether a deal would go through just after the New Year or have to wait until the summer. Allegedly, an ideal scenario for Inter would be to raise the cash in January before retaining him on loan for the remainder of the campaign.

Chelsea already have a starting-quality right-back in Reece James but Potter may need cover ahead of next season, with Cesar Azpilicueta venturing further into his mid-thirties. Furthermore, the Spaniard expressed a desire to join Barcelona during the summer having spent the last decade of his career at Stamford Bridge.

Reports suggest that Inter will demand a total £51.6m package for Dumfries which, not coincidentally, would meet the required amount of funds they need to raise in the transfer market before June. The powerful 6ft 2in star is now entering his prime after three years with PSV Eindhoven and 18 months in Milan.

“Denzel Dumfries – what a player he is,” said Micah Richards after witnessing the Dutch beat the USA last week. “I just thought his whole game was brilliant. It was his timing of his runs… He didn’t sort of mix it up too much but when he did it was the right moments. Down this right-hand side he was just breathless.”

The 26-year-old will get another chance to impress on the biggest stage this Friday with the Netherlands set to battle it out with Argentina for a spot in the World Cup semi-finals.
