Donny van de Beek most likely envisaged his debut season at Manchester United to have some tricky spells, but he probably didn’t imagine he’d be benched for the majority of the campaign.

The 24-year-old Dutch international has barely featured at all considering the Red Devils parted ways with £40m for his services, and he showed early promise with a debut goal in the opening day defeat at home to Crystal Palace.

However, while United’s fortunes have improved since that September afternoon, van de Beek’s have worsened, despite showing glimpses of his talent whenever he has been afforded the luxury of minutes on the pitch.

Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has opted to use a number of his other midfield options, including Paul Pogba, Bruno Fernandes, Scott McTominay, Fred and even ageing duo Nemanja Matic and Juan Mata ahead of van de Beek.

The fact that he has been handed just two Premier League starts all season has led some to believe the midfielder could be plotting an exit route from Old Trafford as early as this summer.

Some reports have suggested he could make a premature return to Ajax, though Director of Football for the Amsterdam-based outfit Marc Overmars has ruled out such a deal during an interview with Dutch broadcaster NOS.

“I think Donny should just fight, stay next year and try to claim a starting place.

“You shouldn’t leave so quickly.”

Another member of the Ajax boardroom has also had their say on van de Beek’s situation, with CEO Edwin van der Sar, formerly of Manchester United, claiming he is saddened by what has happened to the midfielder since he arrived in England.

“Of course I feel sad for Donny,” the former United, Ajax and Netherlands goalkeeper told ESPN’s Good Morning Eredivisie.

“He walked the perfect path before joining United. He joined the [Ajax] first team from the academy, became a starter, won trophies, performed in Europe.

“But the midfield of Manchester United is too stacked, they’ve not had any injuries. It’s hard for him.”

Premier League talking points: Manchester United protests

van de Beek has not been able to avoid the taunts of both fans and fellow players alike, with even a Manchester United talent poking fun at him.

Manchester United women’s star Jackie Groenen has admitted she has teased her Dutch compatriot over the fact she has played more at Old Trafford than he has.

Van de Beek has failed to start a single league match for United since the turn of the year and only played more than 20 minutes once for the Red Devils since last December.
