Former Liverpool midfielder Don Hutchinson has urged Donny van de Beek to get the ball rolling on a move away from Manchester United ahead of the January transfer window. The 24-year-old, who has been linked with Inter Milan in recent weeks, has struggled to assert himself at Old Trafford since joining the club from Ajax last summer.

Van de Beek made just four Premier League starts in his debut season with United and has continued in a similar vein this time around.

He has only played six minutes in the competition so far, with his sole appearance coming in the form of a late cameo against Newcastle United earlier this month.

The Dutchman was handed a rare start against Young Boys in the Champions League last week, but was hauled off at half-time after an uninspiring performance in the middle of the park and with United down to 10 men.

It was suggested towards the end of the summer transfer window that Van de Beek could benefit from a move elsewhere in order to recapture his Ajax form of old.

Everton reportedly tried to bring him to Goodison Park on deadline day but were denied by United, who opted to keep Van de Beek on their books.

Inter have since emerged as potential admirers of the midfielder and have been tipped to launch a move for his services in the near future.

Hutchinson, who scored seven goals in 45 appearances for Liverpool between 1990 and 1994, has suggested that Van de Beek needs to take the initiative and speak to his agent in order to kickstart proceedings over an Old Trafford exit.

“I think if you’re Donny van de Beek now, you’ve got to have the conversation with your agent, who’s then gonna have the conversation with the manager, chief executive because you’ve got a World Cup coming up in 18 months time,” Hutchison told BBC 5 Live Sport.

“He cannot afford just to be sitting on that bench, playing in the League Cup midweeks and playing odd minutes and getting brought on and getting taken off.

“If I’m Donny van de Beek I need to move on from Manchester United.”

It remains to be seen whether Van de Beek will eventually come good at United over the next few months as the Red Devils go in search of their first Premier League title since 2013.

It seems unlikely that he will play a significant role for the club, with Bruno Fernandes almost guaranteed to start in the No 10 role when fit and ready.

Meanwhile, the likes of Fred and Scott McTominay look set to occupy the deep-lying positions on a first-choice basis, suggesting that Van de Beek will be forced to make do with substitute appearances and the odd start in cup competitions.

The player himself admitted earlier this month that he has been struggling mentally as a result of his non-involvement at United, but stressed that he can only look to improve in order to work his way into the side.

“It’s difficult if you’re not really in the team, you’re waiting for your chance,” Van de Beek told Vibe with Five.

“That’s not easy if you’re not playing, also not for the confidence. It’s normal you need a bit of time to adapt but of course you are not happy.

“I want to play, that is clear. It’s so hard, I train really hard every day, I try to improve and just wait for your chance, that’s the only thing I can do.

“If the moment is there, I have to be ready, it’s as simple as that.”
