Donny van de Beek says Cristiano Ronaldo makes a “big, big difference” to Manchester United’s Premier League hopes. The Portuguese star completed his return to Old Trafford on transfer deadline day and is already making an impact on his new teammates.

Ronaldo’s return rounded off a superb transfer window for United, giving manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer a far stronger squad.

Raphael Varane and Jadon Sancho were the club’s other high-profile additions.

And, speaking to Rio Ferdinand on the Vibe with Five podcast, United midfielder Van de Beek says the new faces can make a big impact.

“To play with these players on the pitch is fantastic, also to train with them every day – that’s what we need, I think, winners,” he said.

“I’m really positive about us this season, I think we can make big steps now.”

Ronaldo made an early return to Manchester from international duty after picking up a yellow-card suspension.

And Van de Beek says that he expects the 36-year-old to make a huge impact in training.

“The level goes up for sure,” he revealed. “If good players join the team, the level at training goes up.

“In training you may play with around 24 players, but good players can make a big, big difference.”

Van de Beek’s chances of picking up playing time have reduced further following the arrival of Sancho and Ronaldo.

But the Netherlands international, who made 19 Premier League appearances in his debut season at Old Trafford, is trying to stay positive.

“The start was good. My first game I scored and I think I did well, but after that it’s difficult if you’re not really in the team,” he said.

“It’s not easy if you’re not playing, for the confidence and everything.

“In the first year when you come from another competition it’s normal that you need time to adapt to everything,” he added.

“But of course yeah you are not happy, I want to play, that is clear.

“The only thing you can do is train really hard every day, try and improve and just wait for your chance.

“If the moment is there you have to be ready.”
