‘Donald Trump invited Wayne Rooney and I to the White House after golf meet-up’

Donald Trump invited Wayne Rooney and Manchester United masseur Rod Thornley to the White House, after meeting them on the golf course.

As masseurs go, very few, if any, on the planet have met as many famous people as Thornley. He is also full of many stories, such as the time Cristiano Ronaldo sold him his Porsche in exchange for the phone number of a former X-Factor contestant.

However, one of his most fascinating tales came when he bumped into ‘The Donald’ while he was still the president of the United States. Thornley may have enough tales to fill many books, but his brief period with the multi-billionaire would certainly be one of the first chapters.

It was as mad as you would expect.

“We set off playing, having a few drinks, and then the next thing we see is this f***ing entourage and it’s just like 20 buggies on one hole,” Thornley said to the Under the Cosh podcast. “We were like ‘what the f*** is going on’ and the caddy, who was taking us around was his normal caddy. He said, oh yeah he has this every single time he is here and he ploughs through the course.

“He’s ploughing through the course and we get to about the 14th hole and the Secret Service come onto our hole when we’re about to tee off. They said ‘excuse me guys, you have to move aside, because the president is coming through. Please don’t talk to him. If he speaks to you then you can speak to him back, but just leave him alone’.

“We’re like ‘it’s f***ing Wayne Rooney. He’s going to speak to Wayne Rooney’. Wayne had actually been coaching his son Baron, on the White House lawn, leading up to this and he had already been invited to his house at Christmas and Thanksgiving.”

Rooney was one of the most popular and admired players in world football, over the course of his career. At times, he was still dazzling fans over the course of his brief stint at DC United. Incredibly, Trump, who is not exactly known for his love of ‘the Beautiful Game,’ was one of those fans.

“Wayne, about three weeks, before had scored this hattrick for DC United in a game where they won 5-2,” Thornley added. “He’s come onto that hole and we’ve got like 20 buggies, including Mayor Giuliani, the New York mayor. He’s like his lawyer or something so he’s on the hole with him. He [Trump] went ‘this guy, yeah, this guy, he scored five goals for DC United’.

“I’m looking at Wazza going, ‘go on, correct him’. Wayne’s like, ‘yeah, yeah I did’ and I was like ‘you lying b******’. We played the next hole, the one after that, and then he kept going.”
