Diego Costa is sent off for HEADBUTTING Ben Mee in draw with Brentford

Oh Diego! Bad boy Costa is sent off after HEADBUTTING Ben Mee off the ball in the dying seconds of Wolves’ 1-1 draw with Brentford… meaning the Brazilian won’t play any football until after the World Cup

  • Costa received the first red card of his Premier League career on Saturday
  • The 34-year-old striker will now be unavailable until after the World Cup

Diego Costa has again demonstrated his ability to wreak havoc amongst defenders as the Wolves striker was sent off for headbutting Brentford centre-back Ben Mee in Saturday’s 1-1 draw at the Molineux Stadium.

Costa picked up his first red card since returning to the Premier League with Wolves in the summer as he lashed out in stoppage time, catching Mee in the face as the two came together.

More surprisingly is that this was the Brazilians first red card despite gaining a bad-boy reputation during his years at Chelsea.

Saturday’s dismissal means Costa will now miss matches against Brighton, Leeds, and Arsenal, meaning he will be unavailable until after the World Cup when Wolves visit Everton.

Referee Bobby Madley had to send Costa off after VAR showed clear contact was made

The 34-year-old has struggled to regain the form that saw him help lead Chelsea to two Premier League titles during three seasons in London.

Costa is yet to score for his new club this season after returning to the English top-flight as a free agent with the Midlands side.

Referee Bobby Madley was forced into sending Costa down the touchline in the 97th minute with the official reducing the home side to 10-men in his first top-flight game for over four years.

Video replays showed Costa and Mee tussling on the edge of the Brentford box with the defender attempting to deny the striker a run into the box as Wolves sought a late winner.

In a bizzare moment of madness, Costa then tries to hit Mee with his head, and after failing to make contact with his target first-time then makes a second lunge, this time catching the Englishman in the face.

VAR reviewed the incident with the referee then having presented with obvious cause to send Costa heading for the tunnel and an early trip into the Wolves dressing room as Wolves battened down the hatches for what was a nervy ending to the game.

The former Spanish international momentarily protested his innocence as Brentford players surrounded Madley demanding Costa’s removal as Mee received medical attention on the turf.

Costa later tried to speak to the defender before leaving the pitch, passing a furious Thomas Frank as the Brentford coach feared for his defender’s welfare following the incident.
