Didier Deschamps has held talks with French Football Federation President Noel Le Graet over his future as manager following their heartbreaking World Cup final defeat, with a decision reportedly expected next month.

Le Graet has been vocal in his desire to keep Deschamps in charge of the French national team, with the official even hinting he could lead the team at the 2030 World Cup.

The FFF President confirmed to Le Parisien that a meeting was held on Thursday, but declined to comment further on the talks.

An extension to his contract, which expires at the end of the month, has reportedly become the likeliest scenario.

Options are expected to include a two-year contract for Euro 2024 with the possibility to extend to the 2026 World Cup, as well as a potential four-year deal to take France through the next two major tournaments.

A decision could reportedly be announced on either January 6 or 7, following the FFF’s executive committee meeting.

Deschamps, who won the World Cup for France as a player in 1998 and a manager in 2018, has been at the helm of Les Bleus since 2012.

A decision on Deschamps future as manager could be announced at the start of January

In a decade in the job, Deschamps has guided France to three major finals, winning the 2018 World Cup in Russia and a Nations League title.

He led Les Bleus to the final in Qatar, but his side suffered a penalty shootout defeat to a Lionel Messi inspired Argentina.

Le Graet insisted earlier this month that the FFF were seeking to extending Deschamps’ contract until at least Euro 2024 in Germany, when his final term as president also ends.

Le Graet has also claimed he had not thought about the prospect Deschamps could leave when asked about the possibility France legend Zinedine Zidane could succeed his former team-mate.

The FFF President has expressed confidence he will reach an agreement with Deschamps to continue.

There have been suggestions that Zidane will seek a return to club management if Deschamps stays on.

Earlier this month, it emerged via Get French Football News that Deschamps is keen to lead his side at Germany 2024, and possibly to the World Cup in North America in 2026.

It is believed that the talent of France’s young players is a key factor in Deschamps’ desire to stay in his role.

It is, however, believed that Karim Benzema would consider coming out of retirement if Deschamps was to be replaced with Zidane – who managed him at Real Madrid.
