Giovanni van Bronckhorst has reportedly held strategic talks with the board at Rangers as the Gers icon seemingly closes in on the top job at Ibrox.

The defender spent three years with Rangers before heading to Arsenal at the height of a glittering 16-year career which also saw him amass 107 caps for the Netherlands.

But now the 46-year-old is being lined up for a return to Scotland in a different role as Rangers seek a replacement for Steven Gerrard, who was appointed as the new Aston Villa boss last week.

According to Sky Sports, Van Bronckhorst is one of three names currently being considered by the Ibrox hierarchy from an initial four-man shortlist.

The report goes on to claim that, although nothing concrete has been discussed in terms of a contract, Van Bronckhorst impressed Rangers chiefs during a discussion over the club’s short and long-term strategy.

Rangers are yet to make a final decision on who will take the reins at the club, but it seems as though their values align well with Van Bronckhorst ahead of further talks on Monday.

It’s not clear who else is on the shortlist alongside Van Bronckhorst, although Sky Sports are claiming that Frank Lampard is not a name that is currently under consideration, despite reports elsewhere.

The former left-back already has coaching experience under his belt following his storied playing career.

Van Bronckhorst joined former Barcelona boss Ronald Koeman at Feyenoord back in 2010 before he eventually wound up as the Dutch side’s manager in 2015.

He steered the Dutch giants to success in the KNVB Cup in his maiden year in charge, before ending Feyenoord’s 18-year league drought the following season by guiding them to the Eredivisie title.

Since standing down at the end of the 2018/19 season, Van Bronckhorst has also coached in China briefly. He spent one season in charge of Guangzhou R&F, guiding them to 11th in the Chinese Super League before quitting after just 11 months in the post to return to his family.

After a year out of the game, Van Bronckhorst has now emerged as the favourite to return to Ibrox as Gerrard’s replacement.

Gerrard left the club at the top of the Scottish Premier League after finally forcing Celtic to relinquish their stranglehold over the league last season.

If he is appointed by the Ibrox hierarchy, Van Bronckhorst will be tasked with guiding Rangers to back-to-back league titles for the first time in over a decade after this success under Gerrard last year.
