Didier Deschamps was so furious with his France side at half-time that he gave a short interview to French TV lambasting his players.

It came after a miserable first 45 minutes from the World Cup holders in the final against Argentina. The South Americans raced into a two-goal lead after Lionel Messi and Angel di Maria netted when they blew Les Bleus away.

So much so that Deschamps furiously took Olivier Giroud and Ousmane Dembele off after 40 minutes and that anger had not quelled over half-time. Instead, he gave an interview to French TV channel TF1.

He said: "We utterly failed to show up in the first half. We expected [their intensity], we neither had the correct attitude nor the correct response.

"It will take a lot to worry them and come back. They are really playing a World Cup final."

Whatever Deschamps said behind closed doors, it seemed to work. Well, it certainly inspired Kylian Mbappe – who did not have a kick in the opening half.

With just over 10 minutes to go, substitute Randal Kolo Muani won a penalty that was converted by France's superstar before the Paris Saint-Germain forward netted a sublime strike on the volley to equal the scores – all in the space of 100 seconds.

It saw the match go to extra-time where – guess who – both Messi and Mbappe were on the scoresheet which sent the match to penalties. While both netted their spot-kicks, the other French players could not.

Kingsley Coman and Aurelien Tchouameni missed their penalties after some dark arts from Emi Martinez. The Aston Villa keeper pulled off an incredible save before appearing to get in the Real Madrid star's head, who dragged his effort wide.

As a result, it led to Argentina winning the World Cup for the third time in their history – and the first for Messi in his career. At the age of 35, it is likely the last time that the seven-time Ballon d'Or winner will take part in the competition while his legacy has now surely be cemented.
