Des Kelly explains getting Gundogan signature live on air after fan shame

Man City fans celebrate in Manchester after Champions League final win

Des Kelly has taken to social media to explain his on-air request for Ilkay Gundogan to sign a bright armband after Saturday’s Champions League final. The BT Sport interviewer attracted mass criticism for his uncharacteristic actions in Istanbul, but they were with good reason.

Rodri’s second-half strike sealed Manchester City’s maiden Champions League title – and a historic treble – with a 1-0 win against Inter Milan.

After full-time, Kelly interviewed players and staff on the Ataturk Olympic Stadium pitch, drawing questions over why he was wearing a captain’s armband.

During a chat with City captain Gundogan, he explained why he was wearing the bright accessory and caught many by surprise when he asked the German midfielder to sign it.

“Could you sign this armband? Because I’m getting an enormous amount of stick on Twitter for wearing it,” Kelly said.

“I have to wear that to get on the pitch, but everyone thinks I’m the new John Terry or something. So this is a memento that I’ll keep forever.”

A smiling Gundogan agreed, signing the armband much to Kelly’s delight, which rubbed viewers the wrong way.

But Kelly explained his actions on Twitter on Sunday with an image of Gundogan holding the armband, revealing he was auctioning it for charity.

He wrote: “The armband kindly signed by Man City’s treble-winning captain Ilkay Gundogan on TV tonight is to be auctioned online for Royal National College For The Blind. Details to follow soon. @ManCity”

Gundogan could’ve ended his City career by lifting the biggest prize in club football, with his contract set to expire on July 1.

The 32-year-old has been heavily linked with a Barcelona switch in recent weeks, but there is a belief he could extend his stay at the Etihad Stadium.

During his interview with BT Sport, he expressed his delight in making history under Pep Guardiola.

“It is an unbelievable night. We are so happy. It’s difficult to put everything into words, what just happened. Still difficult to realise. Today we made history,” Gundogan explained.

“No, it didn’t [sink in yet]. We knew everyone was talking about the treble, especially after that FA Cup final.

“The pressure was there, but this team is built to handle the pressure in the best possible way. That is what we did tonight.”
