Classy Denmark boss Kasper Hjulmand hailed Gareth Southgate for doing a "great job" as England manager following their Euro 2020 semi-final defeat against the Three Lions on Wednesday night.

England have reached the final of a major tournament for the first time since 1966, and the European Championship final for the first time ever.

They had to come from behind to do so, however, after Mikkel Damsgaard fired Denmark ahead at Wembley with a sensational free-kick on the half-hour mark.

But it only took England nine minutes to equalise, with Simon Kjaer's own goal from Bukayo Saka's cross levelling proceedings.

The game then went to extra-time despite Southgate's men ramping up some late pressure, and at the end of the first half referee Danny Makkelie pointed to the spot when Raheem Sterling went down inside the box.

Harry Kane stepped up and saw his first effort saved by Kasper Schmeichel, but the England captain swept home the rebound to secure the country's first ever European Championship final.

Despite their gut-wrenching defeat in London, Hjulmand paid tribute to opposite number Southgate after Wednesday night's gruelling semi-final, branding the England manager's work on and off the pitch "outstanding".

"First of all I want to congratulate my colleague Gareth," the Denmark boss said at the start of his post-match press conference.

"I've followed what the FA has done strategically and especially how Gareth has led this team for a number of years now; how he works with the young players, how he gets involved and how he behaves himself with the values he has, and how he represents and communicates is outstanding.

"So congratulations Gareth, I think you're doing a great job in a difficult job. So congratulations."

Southgate was overjoyed to lead England past the semi-finals of a major tournament for the first time in 55 years, saying: “I’m so proud of the players. It’s an incredible occasion to be a part of – we knew it wouldn’t be straightforward.

"We said to the players we’ll have to show our resilience and come back from some setbacks, and we’ve done that tonight."
