Turkish club Besiktas are reportedly not going to take up the £8million option in Dele Alli’s loan contract and the former Tottenham and England star is set to return to Everton at the end of the season. The 26-year-old has seen his career fall and the 37-cap international has been banished from the first team at Besiktas according to Turkish reports after falling out with boss Senol Gunes. Express Sport has looked at four potential next moves for Alli…

Return to Everton

Alli will have one year left on his Everton contract when he returns to Goodison in the summer and it could be difficult for the club to shift him as teams would unlikely be prepared to pay his high salary. Toffees boss Sean Dyche confirmed that he would speak to Alli during the upcoming international break and a return to Merseyside may be one of his few options.

Everton under Dyche have often used three hard-working midfielders in Idrissa Gueye, Andre Onana and Abdoulaye Doucoure, but Alli could offer more guile and attacking threat if he is given the chance by Dyche.

Drop down to Championship

If Dyche and Everton deem Alli no longer Premier League quality – as Frank Lampard did last year – he may be forced to drop down a level if he wants to return to playing football in England. Dean Whitehead worked as a coach at Besiktas with Alli before later moving to Cardiff and was asked by Express Sport if he would try to tempt the former Spurs star to south Wales.

Whitehead replied: “Have you got a spare £100k a week? Seriously, if that’s the level that Dele needs to regain his confidence and form, I don’t think he’s someone who would turn his nose up.”

Alli would likely have plenty of suitors in the Championship if he is willing to forgo his salary, and he has experience in the EFL having burst onto the scene with MK Dons.

Reunite with Pochettino

Mauricio Pochettino nurtured Alli from a raw talent into one of the brightest talents in Europe during their successful time together at Tottenham. The Argentine coach is currently out of work but there have been rumours of him returning to north London as Antonio Conte’s contract is set to expire at the end of the season and he is unlikely to extend his stay at the club.

Pochettino and Alli may feel that a reunion could be the way to get the best out of him, as Pochettino’s exit from Spurs was the catalyst for his downfall, but if the 51-year-old does return he may be tempted to bring Alli back with him.

Retire from football

Alli has been previously urged to quit football and may consider it if he feels that he cannot get back to the peak of his career. Former Liverpool striker Stan Collymore has questioned whether he should continue playing, after an underwhelming spell at Everton.

“Dele needs to answer some serious question, for himself, no one else. He has to ask: Do you want to play professional football, or are you not cut out for it?” Collymore wrote in his column for The Mirror in 2022.

“If not, don’t do that, think of conning clubs into giving you a year, based on past reputations, and drift down the ranks. Everton, to Norwich, to the Championship. If no, then get to the end of your contract, and move on with life.”
