Dele Alli does ‘Timo Werner impression’ with miss – but Spurs fans impressed

Tottenham midfielder Dele Alli shocked fans with a huge miss against Liverpool during the thrilling 2-2 draw on Sunday.

Spurs went a goal ahead in the 13th minute courtesy of captain Harry Kane, while the Reds were denied a huge penalty shout despite Diogo Jota being brought down in the box.

Alli, 25, had the chance to double his side’s lead in the 30th minute when he was found with plenty of space and only goalkeeper Alisson Becker to beat.

But the Englishman’s curled effort was pushed just wide of the post by the goalkeeper, leaving Spurs boss Antonio Conte with his head in his hands.

Missing a clear-cut chance unsurprisingly resulted in some mockery from fans online, with one Twitter user likening it to Chelsea striker Timo Werner’s catalogue of missed chances.

They brutally wrote on Twitter: “Dele Alli with the best Timo Werner impression,” followed by several laughing face emojis.

But other Spurs fans were less critical of Alli, who has struggled to reach the same heights he achieved as a youngster in recent seasons.

One fan said: “Feel bad for Dele Alli, he’s actually trying but can’t finish.”

A second fan also noticed the midfielder’s improved work-rate, adding: “Dele Alli hasn’t just impressed going forward, but defensively, he’s been switched on. Seems like he doesn’t want to waste this chance and is working harder than anyone else on the pitch currently.

“Spurs have pressed at the exact right points today and it’s earning them chances.”

Another tweeted: “Great to have u back Dele Alli,” with a love-struck face.

That sentiment was shared by Conte after match, with his side coming back to secure a crucial 2-2 draw at home in a highly controversial game.

Conte said: “Dele Alli played a good game. With this formation with three midfielders he can play as a midfielder and I think he’s strong physically.

“If he was a bit effective he could score but the performance was good. It’s important to understand about the players I can count now for the future.

“Also to find the right solution for formation. To have two possibilities is good for the team."
