Deeney backs Sean Dyche to save Everton after turning ‘idiot’ into goal-grabber

Troy Deeney has backed Sean Dyche to save Everton from the drop after turning him from an "idiot" into a goal-grabber.

The Birmingham City striker previously spent a season playing under Dyche at Watford between 2011 and 2012, the gaffer's sole campaign in charge at Vicarage Road. Dyche is currently set to take over at Everton, having emerged as the club's preferred candidate to replace Frank Lampard following his sacking on Monday.

Ahead of his appointment being confirmed, Dyche has received a glowing review from Deeney, who wrote in his column for The Sun: "Dyche was my assistant manager, and then my manager, when I was at Watford.

"I was a young idiot and Dyche told me as much. He was right and I needed it. When he was No2 to Malky Mackay I didn’t like him and I didn’t think he liked me.

"So when he took over, I assumed I’d be out. Instead, he was the making of me. He told me home truths because he rated me and believed in me — he could see something there when a lot of people couldn’t."

Deeney also revealed that Dyche would regularly write to and visit him during his time in prison. The former Watford star spent three months behind bars in 2012 after pleading guilty to a charge of affray.

Under Dyche, Deeney scored 12 goals in 46 appearances during the 2011/12 season, finishing the campaign as Watford's top scorer, both in the league and across all competitions.

The Hornets ended that season 11th in the Championship having given Dyche his first senior managerial role after working with the club's under-18s and assisting his predecessor Mackay at Vicarage Road.

Dyche went on to spend almost a decade in charge of Burnley after leaving Watford, gaining promotion to the Premier League twice and qualifying for Europe for the first time in more than 50 years in his time at Turf Moor.

He has been out of management since being sacked by the Clarets in April, but is now set to replace Lampard at Everton. The Toffees currently find themselves 19th in the Premier League and two points from safety after a run of eight winless matches.
