Declan Rice’s recent comments about Cristiano Ronaldo will provide a welcome boost for Manchester United fans keen to see the West Ham midfielder join their club this summer. United have been linked with a move to sign Rice, although they reportedly face competition from Premier League rivals Chelsea.

Rice, 23, continues to impress for the Hammers and it looks inevitable that the player will move to a bigger club at some point in the near future.

Where that will be remains to be seen, though Rice is certainly a fan of Portuguese superstar Ronaldo.

In a recent interview with Gary Neville for the latest episode of ‘The Overlap’, Rice said he would chose Ronaldo to take a decisive penalty in a game over any other player.

“Gonna have to say Ronaldo,” he said. “100 per-cent Ronaldo.

“The penalties he’s scored in big moments, Champions League finals, tournaments.

“I’d 100% put my money on CR7 for the big occasions.”

It’s not secret United need to strengthen in the defensive midfield position and Rice would fit the bill perfectly.

However, when asked who his childhood idol was by Neville, Rice opted for Chelsea legend John Terry and said the pair are in regular contact with one another.

“I speak to him a lot, all the time really,” Rice told Neville.

“For me, obviously growing up being a Chelsea fan, having a season ticket there and going to all the games, being in the academy, just him, looking at him, everything was JT.

“The kits would be JT with number 26 on the back.

“Even when I was younger, I said if I make it, I want to be number 26.

“I feel like as I’ve got older I have grown out of that – it would look a bit creepy if I was getting 26 on the back now because of JT.

“But 100% Terry. He was amazing for me when I got realised as well, he picked up the phone – he didn’t have to, I was only 14 at the time – and I was speaking to my idol. We’ve got a good relationship.”

Rice joined boyhood club Chelsea when he was just seven, before being released eight years later.

The England midfielder later joined West Ham, where he progressed through the ranks and made his senior debut for the club on the final day of the 2016-17 Premier League season against Burnley.
