De Gea’s stance on joining Newcastle as Magpies in dire need of ex-Man Utd star
Wilson hopes to aid Newcastle's Champions League push on injury return
Former Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea would be very interested in joining Newcastle in January on a free transfer, according to reports. The Spanish stopper remains a free agent after departing Old Trafford at the end of last season, but Eddie Howe’s injury crisis may force the Magpies’ hand into contacting the 33-year-old.
Nick Pope has been sidelined for several months after undergoing surgery on his shoulder, while his backup Martin Dubravka is also nursing an injury. The 34-year-old Slovakian has started each of Newcastle’s last three games but Howe confirmed that he is a doubt for their Champions League tie with AC Milan on Wednesday.
“That’s currently unclear,” Howe said when asked about whether Dubravka would play in Europe despite an ongoing back issue. The goalkeeper, Anthony Gordon and Sean Longstaff all missed Tuesday’s training session but Howe remained coy about their fitness.
“You can read into it whatever you want,” he added. “We’re two days after a game so we’re trying to manage players. We’ll see who’s fit for tomorrow.”

JUST IN Newcastle chiefs told to expect call from De Gea’s agent after Tottenham loss[TRANSFERS]
Former Liverpool goalkeeper Loris Karius is on standby but Newcastle do have the opportunity to sign De Gea on a free transfer in January. He recently rejected the chance to join Cristiano Ronaldo in Saudi Arabia with Al Nassr, hoping to remain in Europe as a number one, according to The Sun.
Newcastle may be one of the few teams that can match De Gea’s wage demands, albeit on a short-term contract, while offering him European football and a spot as their first-choice goalkeeper.
And De Gea is interested in joining Newcastle according to Fabrizio Romano. He claimed that the goalkeeper is waiting for a call from the Magpies and would love to join and return to the Premier League.

Dubravka did not cover himself in glory during Newcastle’s recent 4-1 defeat away to Tottenham, perhaps further prompting the need to bring in another goalkeeper while Pope remains sidelined.
After the match, former Spurs midfielder Jamie Redknapp called on Newcastle to get in touch with De Gea over a January move – which the goalkeeper appears to be keen on as he remains a free agent nearly six months on from his United exit.
“I would say that bringing in David de Gea for Martin Dubravka would be an upgrade after what he did at Manchester United,” Redknapp told Sky Sports.
“It’s a nasty injury (to Pope), and so when you’ve got a goalkeeper of that quality I would do it and not wait as others might move ahead of you. I’m surprised someone hasn’t taken him already to be honest.”
