David de Gea has reportedly been left out of Spain's 55-man World Cup squad in a huge blow for the Manchester United star.

The goalkeeper has been the first-choice stopper at Old Trafford for over a decade but has been snubbed by Luis Enrique, despite having the opportunity to pick five starting XIs worth of players.

And it does not look like there is a way back for the 31-year-old, with Enqirue preferring goalkeepers that can play out with their feet. That tactical choice means that De Gea is likely to remain in Manchester as the Qatar World Cup rages on.

According to AS, De Gea is the big-name omission from Spain's initial 55-man squad that has been submitted to FIFA.

That squad will be whittled down to 25 before the competition gets underway, meaning that unless there are some serious injuries in the goalkeeping department – there is no World Cup for the Spaniard.

Instead, Chelsea star Kepa Arrizabalaga and Brentford's David Raya have been picked over the United goalie, as well as Brighton ace Robert Sanchez. Athletic Bilbao keeper Unai Simon and Getafe ace David Soria are also on the plane.

While De Gea's absence is certainly a big-name omission, it might come as no shock considering he has not played for the Furia Roja since October 2020. On that occasion, it was the United star that made a huge mistake that saw Ukraine claim a famous 1-0 victory.

In the summer after De Gea was not named in the Nations League squad, Enrique seemed to all but end his chances of redeeming himself for his nation.

He said: “I need a goalkeeper that transmits peace and calmness to me. That doesn’t mean they won’t make mistakes, errors are part of football. What they generate I like a lot.”
