David Seaman U-turns on Cristiano Ronaldo transfer advice to Mikel Arteta
David Seaman has U-turned on his advice to Mikel Arteta and has now warned him against making a shock move to sign Cristiano Ronaldo in January.
The now former Manchester United superstar’s future remains the subject of intense speculation following the termination of his contract last month.
United cut their ties with the five-time Ballon d’Or winner following his explosive interview with Piers Morgan, during which he accused Erik ten Hag of lacking respect while he was also highly critical of the Glazer family for presiding over a period of extended decline.
Arsenal’s need for a new striker has been exacerbated by the injury suffered by Gabriel Jesus while on World Cup duty with Brazil.
The 25-year-old has had a galvanising effect on the Gunners’ forward line since his £45million summer move but he is likely to miss up to three months of the season having undergone knee surgery earlier this week.
Seaman had originally suggested, during his own interview with Morgan, that Ronaldo would represent an excellent short-term signing for his old club.
Following his acrimonious departure from United, however, allied to his conduct while on international duty with Portugal at the World Cup, which has culminated in him being dropped, Seaman believes Arsenal would be better off focusing on alternative targets.
He said: ‘I know I went on Piers Morgan show and said I’d have him. I don’t think I would now if I’m honest.
‘I don’t know what’s happening with his attitude. That’s why I don’t want to see him at Arsenal as harmony at the club is brilliant.’
Ronaldo had hoped to use the ongoing World Cup as something of a shop window and believed a positive showing in Qatar would convince a club with Champions League aspirations that he was worthy of a move to a European giant.
Fernando Santos brought Ronaldo on as a substitute with 15 minutes remaining against Switzerland on Tuesday and had a goal ruled out for offside, before storming down the tunnel and refusing to join his teammates in their post-match celebrations.
The sulky striker did, at least, stop for reporters in the mixed zone and offered a brief response to reports that claim he has already verbally agreed to sign a deal worth a staggering £432million.
‘No, that’s not true — not true,’ he said.
