David Moyes could claim revenge on former club Manchester United in the summer transfer window.

The Hammers are being linked with a move for West Bromwich Albion keeper Sam Johnstone, who is out of contract at the Hawthorns next summer.

Sam Allardyce’s side are on the verge of relegation to the Championship and are at risk of losing a number of first-team players at the end of the season.

One of those expected to move on is Johnstone, who has been excellent for the Baggies despite the club’s poor defensive record in the division this term.

West Ham are among the clubs interested in securing a cut-price deal for the 28-year-old shot-stopper with Lukasz Fabianski now 36 years of age.

But the Red Devils are, too, eyeing up a deal for Johnstone as the club prepares for the potential exit of David De Gea.

The Spanish keeper has lost his place in the starting-eleven to Dean Henderson and is not prepared to serve as a back-up option in the team.

Third-choice United keeper Sergio Romero is also on his way out of Old Trafford this summer, presenting Ole Gunnar Solskjaer with a dilemma.

Solskjaer is understood to be in favour of a move for Johnstone, though West Ham is his preferred destination due to a greater guarantee of game time.

Johnstone has already experienced how challenging it is to become the No.1 at United, having come through the club’s academy and left the club after failing to make a first-team appearance.

He was sent out on loan by the Red Devils to eight different clubs between the years of 2011 and 2018 and eventually left the club three years ago on a permanent basis.

Explaining his decision to leave and what it was like remaining in the shadow of De Gea for so long, he told the Mirror:

“Of course leaving United was a tough call, but when you’ve done your loans, banked the experience and David De Gea is still there at No.1 every time you return, you can’t wait around forever.

“You get the taste for playing every week and when you get to a certain age, you want more than to go training every day hoping your chance will come but wondering if it will materialise.

“It felt crazy to sign for West Brom in the sense that I was becoming somebody else’s player, but I’m loving it here. I’ve already played more than 100 games for the club and it feels like home.”
