David Moyes issues transfer warning as West Ham boss tries to make plans
David Moyes has issued a warning to fans who expect his side to break the bank when signing players in the upcoming summer transfer window.
The West Ham United boss guided the Hammers to sixth place in the Premier League table, their best finish since 1999.
The London side will be playing European football in the Europa League, for the first time in their history, after Moyes and West Ham secured their greatest ever Premier League points tally.
But now Moyes has gone on the record asking fans to be patient with any potential transfers, saying he knows what he wants:
"I’ve got a good idea where I’d like to strengthen but getting them in is another matter," said Moyes speaking to Talksport on Tuesday morning.
“Football is skint. The media have a responsibility as well. We’ve just come out of a pandemic where half of the lower league clubs are really financially struggling and nearly went bust.
“The media and pundits who speak about it have to be considerate, and maybe we shouldn’t be spending hundreds of millions on players and wages."
After a successful season, Moyes will know that summer recruitment is key making sure his side stays competitive in the league whilst also staking a claim in Europe.
Although, any incoming deals may have to wait till after the Euros to see who becomes available after putting themselves in the shop window.
Two who Moyes hopes that won't apply for are Jesse Lingard and Declan Rice, who have both been included in Gareth Southgate's 33-man provisional England squad ahead of the European Championships.
The Hammers boss will be hoping the former signs as a West Ham player permanently; it is Lingard's form since his loan move to the London Stadium that has earned him a call up for the Euros.
The 28-year-old netted nine times in 16 appearances for the Hammers and catapulted their push for a Champions League spot, just falling short in the final few fixtures.
Moyes admitted he would love to have Lingard around for West Ham's debut campaign in the Europa League:
"I hope Jesse is here [next season], we would like to keep him but there is no guarantee, he is not our player. He has done an exceptional job for us on loan and we will see where we go from there.

"I hope Jesse will also appreciate that West Ham has been good for Jesse. I think he was in a place where maybe there are not many other clubs where what he has done here would have happened for him.
"We have given him an opportunity and a platform. [We had] a group of players that were in good form going into January, Jesse helped us but he joined a group of players with momentum and a club that was doing well and on the up. So, yes. I would like to keep Jesse."
